250,000 years ago, a scientist named Bertron established a facility on an uninhabited planet named Krypton and began conducting cloning experiments. Bertron would eject the cloned child into the harsh environment and collect its remains. He would then clone a new generation baby and repeat the process over and over. Eventually, the clone became a monster with the ability to adapt to the environment and evolve with a new level of strength and endurance. It realized what its master was doing and killed Bertron.

The monster then traveled across the galaxy and killed any living being it encountered. It then met the Green Lantern Corps and Guardians of the Universe on planet Oa. They named it Doomsday. A being named Radiant, defeated Doomsday and sealed him in a special prison. The chamber was ejected into space where it later crashed on the planet Earth and lay buried underground. For 1000's of years, it slowly freed itself. In the 20th century, Doomsday escaped and fought Superman. Superman was seemingly killed in the battle but later reappeared. It was banished back into space and was manipulated by various villains. Eventually, Doomsday came into possession of President Luthor and was traded to Darkseid for his aid.

Darkseid attempted to clone Doomsday and create an undefeatable army. The monster's DNA proved too complex to replicate. Instead, one of Darkseid's scientists, Dr. Bedlam, used Doomsday's DNA as a template to create an army of non-living beings called animates in its likeness. They were dispatched to Themyscira to distract Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman from Darkseid's true motive, kidnap Kara Zor-El. Superman used a wide angle version of his heat vision to vaporize the Doomsday animates in one move. He showed remorse for taking their lives but Wonder Woman reminded him they had no blood nor minds.
