Victor Fries developed an interest in freezing animals. Mr. and Mrs. Fries were concerned with this and sent him to a private boarding school. Fries was saddened and felt isolated. Later, at college, he met Nora and felt alive again. They soon married. Nora Fries contracted a rare disease and became terminally ill. In order to cure her, Fries went to work for Ferris Boyle and his drug company, Gothcorp, as a cryogenic specialist. He secretly placed Nora in a Gothcorp cryogenic stasis chamber to delay her death and find a cure in the meantime. Boyle found out and put an end to the project. In the scuffle, Fries was doused in chemicals. His body was mutated and could only survive in sub-zero temperatures.
Fries escaped with his wife and plotted revenge. He created a refrigeration suit to sustain him and a Cold Gun, capable of freezing anyone and anything on sight. As Mr. Freeze, he tried to kill Boyle but Batman intervened. In the battle, Nora's chamber was shattered. Freeze then fixated on Batman and swore to destroy everything that he cares about.
When a $1 Billion bounty was placed on Superman, Cold teamed up with several other cryo-themed villains: Icicle, Killer Frost, and Captain Cold. They managed to freeze Batman in his tracks, but Superman made short work of them.
