Sergeant Clifford Zmeck was deemed a certified psychopath and court-martialed by the United States Air Force in 1969 on charges of murder. Zmeck was given a life sentence but he was offered a pardon in exchange for taking part in the top secret Project Atom. Last year, the government experimented on an alien metal bonded to a human test subject named Nathanial Adam by blasting him with a nuclear blast. Unable to find Adam's remains, they declared him dead and searched for another military officer with a jaded career. Zmeck took part in the Major Force Project and was bonded to a triple layer of the same alien metal.

He suffered the same fate and Adam and was blasted into the quantum field where he teleported decades into the future. He met General Wade Eiling, the new head of Project Atom, and was appointed to a position as a secret agent codenamed Major Force. Scientists molded his metal body into a costume and implanted a remote-control device as a fail safe measure. Major Force acted as a government-sanctioned super hero.

Force retained his homicidal tendencies and later killed Alexandra DeWitt, girlfriend of Green Lantern Kyle Rayner. He then stored her remains in a refrigerator and led Rayner to find it. Rayner almost killed Major Force, but the Metropolis Police Department's Special Crimes Unit intervened. Force's obsession with Green Lanterns, an intergalactic military force, continued. He murdered Arisia and was killed in Kyoto, Japan by another Green Lantern, Guy Gardner. Force's energy survived and reformed.

He then became part of a government task force that worked side by side with President Lex Luthor. Force joined only to feed his psychopathic tendancies. He secretly arrived in Gotham City and killed Metallo. Luthor then blamed Superman for the murder and attributed to the incoming Kryptonite meteor. He then joined the group sent to arrest Superman. However, Batman deduced Force was Metallo's killer and baited him into admitting the truth. In the battle, Powergirl punched him too hard and made him unstable. Black Lightning and Captain Atom worked together to contain the radiation. Atom absorbed all of Force and all that was left was his uniform.
