Dr. Bruce Gordon, an astronomer, discovered a fragment of a black diamond called the Heart of Darkness and became the host of Eclipso,a primordial manifestation of God's wrath. After being replaced by Spectre, Eclipso was trapped within the Heart. In 1891, the Heart was split up into pieces. Eclipso took on many hosts as it tried to reconfigure the diamond. If it could do so, its powers would return and he would eclipse the Sun and destroy humanity.
Eclipso teamed up with other villains to capture Superman and Batman and cash in on a $1 Billion bounty. With Superman and Batman out of the way, Eclipso could proceed with his plans to commit genocide.
