Dr. Barbara Minerva was an archaeologist who had built up a reputation of a daredevil who would do whatever it took to acquire an artifact. While on an expedition for the legendary lost city of the Urzkartagan tribe in Africa, her team was betrayed by their guides and ambushed by the Urzkartagans. Minerva and a colleague, Dr. Tom Leavens, escaped by diving into a nearby river. The two discovered lost city during the performance of a ritual. One of the captured members of their team was sacrificed by the Urzkartagan high priest, Chuma. The ritual's purpose was to restore to health of a dying woman who was believed to be an avatar of their cheetah god. Before the ritual could be completed, outsiders attacked the village and murdered everyone. Minerva saved Chuma but they were buried the temple of the Urzkatagan god.
Chuma explained that the ritual would have turned the old woman into a cheetah god. The ritual could only be performed on the full moon and required a blood sacrifice. Corrupted by the lust for immortality and power, Minerva demanded the ritual be done to her. She used Dr. Leavens as the sacrifice. After she had killed him and drank his blood, the ritual began. After the ritual finished, Minerva was transformed into Cheetah and she killed all of the outsiders. She had reverted to human form and decided to take Chuma with her to England.
Cheetah recently surfaced and joined an alliance of super villains intent on capturing Superman and collecting the $1 Billion bounty placed on him by President Luthor. However, those remaining standing were knocked out by a shockwave released by Captain Atom.
