Darkseid continues to seek control over planet Earth. On one attempt, he sent a secret agent named Glorious Godfrey to brainwash the masses to turn them against the world's superheroes. To help serve as a distraction, Darkseid implanted a techno-seed into a nuclear reactor. A giant monster emerged from the superheated plasma. Brimstone, the Engine of Destruction, is a walking nuclear reaction. In the name of Darkseid, it rampaged through the United States until the government sanctioned Suicide Squad killed it.
A second techno-seed was planted in a volcano in the state of Hawai'i. It resurfaced when President Luthor issued a modest bounty on Superman. It most likely took advantage of the opportunity to cause death and destruction.
