Eric Needham was once a third rate Gotham criminal with a heroin addiction. To feed the habit, Needham robbed a liquor store and killed the owner. The owner turned out to be his father. Needham quit drugs and became a vigilante named Black Spider. He declared war on drugs and was financed by a durg lord who wanted to eliminate the competition. He saw Batman as an ally but Spider became an enemy since he was willing to kill and ally with super villains.
Out for revenge against Batman, Black Spider joined several super villains to capture Superman for a $1 Billion bounty. He was beaten by the duo and knocked out by Captain Atom when he arrived and unleashed a shockwave of energy.
