In 2000 B.C., the Druids of ancient England used crystal balls for divination. Between 500 and 1500 A.D., they were used by mystics to see the past, present, and future. Jason Blood retained a crystal ball, and drawing from his heritage, was able to use the crystal ball for remote viewing. Constructed from various forms of rock such as berl, rock crystal, or transparent rock, users often used the featureless crystal ball to focus on questions asked of them and clear their mind of other distractions. In modern times, crystal balls were introduced to the mainstream audience by magicians as a mere stage prop. The one exception would be Zatanna. She appeared to use her crystal ball primarily for accessing the mystical ethernet and informing herself of current events, such as Circe's parole.
