1000's of years ago, the Green Lantern was constructed by the race known as the Guardians of the Universe to fuel their soldiers, the Green Lantern Corps. The Corpsmen's power rings can hold a full charge for 24 hours then must be recharged by a Green Lantern's personal battery. After inserting the ring into the battery, the Green Lantern counts the time needed for a full charge by reciting the Green Lantern Oath. The battery resembles a lantern and is connected to the Central Battery located at headquarters on planet Oa.
In the 31st century, the Corp appears to be non-existent but when Zyx roamed New Metropolis on Earth, he briefly conjured a Green Lantern, most likely an artifact buried somewhere.
