250,000 years ago, a scientist named Bertron established a facility on an uninhabited planet named Krypton and began conducting cloning experiments. Bertron would eject the cloned child into the harsh environment and collect its remains. He would then clone a new generation baby and repeat the process over and over. Eventually, the clone became a monster with the ability to adapt to the environment and evolve with a new level of strength and endurance. It realized what its master was doing and killed Bertron.

The monster then traveled across the galaxy and killed any living being it encountered. It then met the Green Lantern Corps and Guardians of the Universe on planet Oa. They named it Doomsday. The current champion of the Corps, Radiant, defeated Doomsday and sealed him in a special prison. The chamber was ejected into space where it later crashed on the planet Earth and lay buried underground. For 1000's of years, it slowly freed itself. In the 20th century, Doomsday escaped and fought Superman. Superman was seemingly killed in the battle but later reappeared. Eventually, Doomsday was imprisoned in the Phantom Zone.

Faora Hu-Ul was considered a beautiful Kryptonian woman but she carried a hatred toward men. She is also an expert practitioner of the Kryptonian martial art, Horo-Kanu. It attacks the pressure points on the Kryptonian body. Hu-Ul tortured and killed 23 men in her home. She was found out and imprisoned in the Phantom Zone for a 300 Kryptonian year sentence. This was the second longest jail term after Jax-Ur.

Like the other Phantom Zone prisoners, she survived Krypton's destruction, but trapped forever in a non-corporeal form. While imprisoned in the Phantom Zone, she allied herself with General Zod and Jax-Ur and plotted revenge against their people. In the 20th century, she briefly escaped and defeated Superman in their first battle. Hu-Ul was later returned to the Phantom Zone.

Dru-Zod was once the commander of Krypton's military. Zod suffered from megalomania. It was somewhat kept in check by his relationship with a then aspiring scientist named Jor-El, who would later become the father of Superman. A sequence of events that led to Zod's crimes was sparked when Jax-Ur, a renegade scientist, tried to take control of Krypton and destroyed the colonized moon, Wegthor. Krypton's space program was abolished and dismantled. Zod created an army of robotic duplicates in his likeness and led an uprising of his own. He was defeated and sentenced to exile in the Phantom Zone for his crimes.

Decades later, Zod was mistakingly released and quickly moved to conquer Earth with the super powers available to him under the yellow sun. Zod was sent back into the Phantom Zone by Superman.

Faora, Zod, and the others consorted together and planned revenge against Superman. They genetically engineered an antithesis of Superman named Drax. Freed of the weakness to Kryptonite and conditioned to kill Superman, Drax bore the crest of Dru-Zod.

In the 30th century, she and the other prisoners encountered a group from the Legion of Superheroes. Everyone except Phantom Girl was able to make physical contact. Combining Brainiac's technology and Phantom Girl's power, the Legion escaped the Zone before the prisoners could harm them. Their child, Drax fought Superman to a standstill. Drax continued to hear his parents' voices, although it was unclear if it was a mental condition, a limited telepathic connection, or a combination of both.
