Jonathan Crane, later known as Scarecrow, created Fear Gas in order to gather field research into every known phobia. The gas is an organic compound that acts as a panic-inducing psychotropic hallucinogen. Victims who inhale the gas instantly begin to hallucinate and see their worst fears. Some time later, Batman devised an antidote for Fear Gas and experimented on it in the process. As part of a contingency plan to deal with Green Lantern if he ever went wrong, Batman planned to use synthesized Fear Gas to nullify willpower and render the Power Ring useless. When the plan was modified, Green Lantern was led to believe he caused the deaths of innocent civilians. Once Batman arrived and revealed the ruse, Green Lantern overcame his fear and took back his ring without the use of an antidote.
