Kal-El was born as his home planet, Krypton, but the world was already at its end. His father, Jor-El, a brilliant scientist, sent his son away in a rocket with a few choice items, including the symbol of his family. Kal-El landed on Earth in Smallville, Kansas. He was discovered and raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent. They named him Clark from Martha's maiden name. Clark was raised with a strong sense of ethics and morals and when he came of age, he discovered Earth's Sun radiated him and gave him a range of super powers. After a couple years, he decided to use his powers for the sake of humanity and became Superman. After relocating to Metropolis, he took a day job as a reporter for the Daily Planet. Over time, Superman discovered a weakness to red sun radiation and irradiated debris of Krypton, dubbed Kryptonite. Undaunted, Superman cleaned up Metropolis and defied Lex Luthor. Superman later struck up a close friendship with Batman and helped form the Justice League.

While covering the Mayor's press conference, Clark Kent received a call from Lois Lane. She informed him of a suicide attempt at the Daily Planet. Superman rushed to the scene and tried to convince the jumper, Henry Ackerdson, to reconsider. However, it was all a ruse to get Superman in range and in a vulnerable state of mind. Ackerdson was really Metallo and he shot Superman with a Kryptonite bullet. Superman fell to the street below and was in danger of dying. Standard medical tools and procedures failed to perform the needed surgery. The Flash was still waiting at S.T.A.R. Labs Tokyo for a Kryptonite scalpel when his vitals began to drop for the worse. Batman and Green Lantern arrived. Batman handed Cyborg a piece of Kryptonite and had him use it as a surgical cutter. It worked and pierced Superman's chest. Martian Manhunter then pulled out the Kryptonite. In a few seconds, Superman awoke and was back to normal.

Once the Justice League regrouped, they went after their would be killers, the Legion of Doom. However, their leader, Vandal Savage managed to launch his rocket at the Sun. Superman destroyed all but two parts of the rocket. The League quickly initiated a plan to save Earth from the resulting solar flare. In the end, Superman accepted the need for Batman's contingency plans and handed him the Kryptonite bullet that nearly killed him.
