Ma'alefa'ak is the twin brother of J'onn J'onzz and was uniquely born without the power of telepathy. Ostracized, he triggered H'ronmeer's Curse on all Martians. When any used their telepathy, they would burn to death. Ma'alefa'ak lived alone on Mars until he heard his brother survived the extinction and traveled to Earth to finish him off.
Ma'alefa'ak was recruited to join Vandal Savage's plan to destroy the Justice League. Posing as an attractive young blonde woman, he bought a soda drink for Martian Manhunter while he was in the human form of John Jones. He laced the soda drink with magnesium. It had an odd effect on Martian biology and forced him to sweat it out. As a result, it made him flammable. Ma'alefa'ak lit Jones on fire and left him to burn to death. He returned to the Hall of Doom curious about what Savage's ultimate scheme was. In the rematch with Martian Manhunter, Ma'alefa'ak was caught in the thrust of Savage's rocket as it launched.
