In 1541, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado was the first European to enter the midwest area that would later become known as Kansas, named after the Kansa Native American tribe. In 1803, the United States of America bought the land as part of the Louisiana Purchase and absorbed it into the Missouri Territory in 1812. However, parts of the southwest were still owned by Mexico, Spain, and the Republic of Texas until 1848, when the Mexican-American War ended. The Sante Fe Trail, a crucial economic leyline, crossed into Kansas from new Mexico to facilitate the transportation of furs and silver. The Kansas-Nebraska Act became law on May 30, 1854 and made Kansas a territory. It soon became the site of many battles between pro and anti-slavery groups earning the nickname of "Bleeding Kansas." On January 29, 1861, it became the 34th state of the Union and was classified as a slave-free state. The most famous of the Wild West-era cities in Kansas was Dodge City.

Sometime in the late 19th century, in a Kansas town, Madame Lorraine began killing her clients and dumping the bodies in a remote mineshaft. Years later, Red Doc, a wanted man, arrived in the same town and became the latest victim of the madame. Then Jonah Hex appeared in such of Red. He killed a bartender and hired man and injured a young man in total. He retrieved Red's body and stranded Lorraine in the mine.
