Jonah Hex was born in 1839 to an alcoholic father, Woodson Hex, and a meek mother, Virginia "Ginny" Hex. Hex was abandoned by his mother and his father when they sold him to the Apache Native American tribe for animal skins in 1851. The chief trained him in the ways of his people but always treated him as a slave. But soon Hex and the tribal chief's son Noh-Tante came into conflict over a young tribeswoman, White Fawn. Hex was left for dead during an initiation. He was found by a trapper and recovered. For several years, Hex lived as a buffalo hunter. Hex eventually found his way into the United States Calvary in 1861.

In the Civil War, Hex fought for the Confederates, as a lieutenant in the 4th cavalry, even though his ideology conflicted with the South's support of slavery. Though he was blamed for a botched prison break dubbed "The Fort Charlotte Massacre", Hex escaped corporal punishment. Hex returned to the Apache tribe that took him in and challenged Noh-Tante to a one on one duel, which Hex won. The tribe punished him with the "Mark of the Demon", leaving part of his face grotesquely scarred from being burned and he was exiled.

Jonah Hex staggered into a town and killed an outlaw named Lucas "Mad Dog" McGill in a drunken rage for beating a woman. A deputy thanked Hex and noted tracking down wanted men would earn him a fortune. By 1875, Hex built up his reputation as an unrivaled bounty hunter. He was recognized for his gray Confederate jacket, a collection of 19th century weapons such as a Colt Dragoon and lever rifle, and his expert marksmanship.

Years later, Hex was on the trail of Red Doc, an outlaw wanted for $5000. He found the end of the trail in midwest Kansas. After knocking out an arrogant teenager, he entered the bar where Red Doc was last seen. A bar girl tipped him off in exchange for enough money to leave town. In order to distract the bar's patrons and employees, Hex bought rounds of alcohol for everyone. Soon enough, Madame Lorraine, Red's killer, appeared and offered him her services. While trying to interrogate her, Hex killed one of her men, badly injured the other, and killed the bartender. He then forced Lorraine to take him to the dump site of her victims, a mineshaft outside of town. Hex secured Red Doc's body and stranded Lorraine with the bodies of all of her victims.
