Red Doc is a wanted gunslinger, probably for murder and/or robbery, dead or alive for $5000. He rode into a Kansas town drunk and shot a dog just for barking at him. After threatening the house, Red Doc proceeded to buy the best alcohol and was approached by Madame Lorraine. She brought him to her room and shot him dead with a derringer. Red was dumped in the Creedis Mine with dozens of other victims. Jonah Hex soon followed Red's trail to Kansas and took his body to collect on the posted bounty.
