It was fate that first brought Superman to Earth. The innocent baby Kal-El was orphaned when his home planet of Krypton ceased to exist. Fortunately, his space crib was jettisoned to safety and fell to Earth, where young Superman was recovered in a Kansas cornfield by his loving adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent. They adopted him and named him Clark. Even as an infant, he displayed amazing strength. As an adult, he became the superhero Superman and led the Justice League of America. In a battle against the Legion of Doom, Superman went into space with Cyborg, Batman, and Robin to destroy a set of satellites that were swelling the world's glaciers. Upon returning to Earth, Superman learned his arch-nemesis Lex Luthor was lost when a beam struck him and sealed him in ice. Superman's example inspired the Legion of Superheroes in the 31st Century and his origins became public knowledge. However, Lex Luthor was thawed from his icy prison and learned the truth. With the aid of the Time Trapper, Luthor returned to the 21st Century.

Luthor theorized that preventing Kal-El from becoming Superman would also create a paradox in which the Justice League never existed. Solomon Grundy, Cheetah, Bizarro, and Toyman were sent to the past and arrived in Smallville, Kansas. Despite opposition from Aquaman, Cyborg and the Flash, the Legion succeeded. Bizarro launched Kal-El and his space crib back into space. Time Trapper detected a paradox and used his power to banish Superman to the ether of non-existence. As a result, Trapper then banished the rest of the Justice League. Karate Kid and Dawnstar undid Luthor's machinations and Superman dispatched Aquaman, Cyborg and the Flash to respond to several distress calls around the world while he, Batman, Robin, and Wonder Woman fended off Time Trapper. After Trapper was imprisoned in the Eternity Glass once more, Superman offered Karate Kid and Dawnstar the chance to stay with the Justice League but they felt it best to return to the future. Superman flew off to retrieve Lex Luthor and take him to a cell in Blackgate Prison. Karate Kid and Dawnstar discovered a Superman statue had been replaced with a Luthor one and decided to return to the past to correct the change in the timeline.
