King Shark was the unlucky "volunteer" chosen to infiltrate the Gotham City Police Department as part of Harley Quinn's plan to retrieve Clayface's arm before it snitched on them. King was swiftly beaten up and driven to Blackgate Penitentiary. King established himself as a dominant force and attempted to teach the inmates manners. He was later broken out by Harley after she remembered he was still in jail. After the premiere of "A Hard Wayne's Gonna Fall," Mayor Joker had Bruce Wayne arrested on tax evasion. Wayne believed the jail sentence would give him the time he needed to reflect on his psychological trauma. Harley Quinn promised him she would make herself available for any therapy sessions. Barbara Gordon already tried to think of a way to break him out of Blackgate with the Batboat but Wayne declined and placed her in charge of the Bat Family in his absence. He was transported to Blackgate. On Valentine's Day, Catwoman sneaked into Blackgate to give Wayne a heart box filled with Bat-shaped chocolates.

(Comic Canon only): The Bat-Family and Vixen rounded up Black Mask, Lady Marabunta, and several False Face Society goons during a transfer of Lady Firefly from the Boomboom Room's secret lair. Nightwing believed the two police officers present were on Black Mask's payroll. Vixen asked him what he wanted to do about it. Nightwing suggested a field trip to Blackgate Penitentiary. Nightwing informed an officer the Bat-Family was escorting them to Blackgate. Peaches spied the whole thing then called up Poison Ivy and told her what was going on. She was afraid if Mask was imprisoned, they would never find her missing sister Miia. Ivy organized the Ladies and Nonbinaries of Doom and went over the plan. Nightfall was to teleport them, Porcelain, Queen Bee and Livewire would distract the Bat-Family, and Ivy and Knockout would interrogate Black Mask about Miia. Nightfall teleported Ivy's team to Blackgate Penitentiary, to Harley's chagrin. Knockout decked Nightwing into the van and mused he did have wings.

Black Mask slipped out and thanked Nightwing for the assist. Nightwing got her back with a kick. She threatened to make him pay for it. He invited her to try. Robin, Flying Fox, and Orphan wrangled Bella Garten but she somehow snapped the line. Garten took on a new Bat-themed vigilante and wondered if her name was "Patches." She quipped he was still workshopping it. Garten had some suggestions but she passed and made a flat jab at her clothes. Ivy overheard and realized she was Harley Quinn. Harley tried to play it cool but Ivy asked what she was doing and what she was wearing. Garten tried to excuse herself while they talked but Harley wanted to know who she was. She introduced herself as Ivy's ex from college to Harley's surprise. Knockout still was not happy about having to fight the Bat-Family and walked, angry about skipping a shift for the debacle. Everyone froze when Poison Ivy yelled out a curse in frustration.

Black Mask was clocked by Nightwing. Harley put it together that Bella was the reason Ivy didn't answer the phone the other night and returned home without Thai. Harley brought up being surprised to find out she was going to zombify Gotham. Batgirl, Robin, Tiffany Fox, Cassandra Cain, and Porcelain gasped. Harley apologized for being petty and surmised Bella was nice. Ivy told her she was and she could know that if she got a chance to meet her. Harley pointed out she took that choice away. Ivy countered she wasn't completely innocent either. Ivy grabbed all the heroes with giant stalks. Harley claimed she teamed up with them to find intel on Miia. Livewire had enough and fired a fatal blast at Harley. At the last second, Nightfall saved Harley's life. Still angry about Harley breaking into Nightfall's house in Michigan, Livewire prepared to attack again. Ivy wrapped her up and stated she had no right. Livewire demanded to be released or else. Ivy pointed out the plant around her was the "Forever Alive Plant of House Roofs" known for its ability to protect houses from lightning.

Nightfall and Livewire resigned from the Legion and teleported away. Nightfall told Ivy for the time being, they wanted no part of it. Bella pointed out their time would be better spent beating information out of Black Mask. Porcelain brought Queen Bee up to speed on what was going on. Queen Bee was amused and declared that was better than the Tawny Talks special. Vixen nabbed Black Mask and Nightwing grabbed Lady Marabunta. Before Harley could get out her escrima sticks, Ivy wrapped her up in a stalk and questioned Mask alone. Mask feigned ignorance about any "Miia." A Venus Fly Trap bit Mask's left hand hard enough for him to scream and threaten Ivy but he persisted. Ivy choked his neck with a Hyacinthoides wreath. Mask caved and admitted he sold her in Detroit just because he needed the money. Marabunta admitted she had no excuse and the heart wants what the heart wants. Harley suggested they not kill anyone in front of the heroes. Ivy refused to take Harley's hand and left Blackgate with the remains of her Legion, suggesting she tell Peaches since she was the hero.

Harley was inconsolable. Robin tried to rally her to help escort Mask and Marabunta into Blackgate and tell her things would work out somehow. Vixen tried to shake Harley out of her grief after Ivy left with her Legion. She reminded Harley their love for one another would never disappear but they both had to come to an arrangement on their own time and stop keeping secrets from each other. She implored Harley to help finish the mission. Nightwing didn't like Vixen calling Harley "Red Bat." Harley was about to impulsively fire her grapnel line and go after Ivy but she stopped herself and stated Vixen was right.
