Professor Jason Woodrue was a brilliant botanist that struggled to come up with an original idea to keep his grant. He entered into a secret romance with one of his students, Pamela Isley. He found her impossible but she saw it being right every time. Isley eventually showed Woodrue her secret project, half-plant half-human she named "Frank." Woodrue was floored and asked how she did it. Isley revealed she infused his soil with a special serum that combined plant and human DNA and gifted him with a natural immunity to pesticides and most poisons.
Woodrue only saw Frank as a thing that was going to secure his grant and make him a billionaire. Isley didn't care about money and protested him taking credit for her work. He pointed out no one would believe a student over him. Frank became scared by the tone of their arguing. Woodrue tried to leave with Frank but a scuffle led to the serum being spilled and lethal gases were unleashed. Woodrue locked Isley and Frank inside and waited for the former to die. Isley instead injected the remaining serum and survived. Like Woodrue predicted, no one believed her and thought she screwed up her own experiment.
(Comic Canon only) During junior year at Hudson University, Pamela Isley and Bella Garten's relationship fell apart thanks in no small part to a professor named Dr. Jason Woodrue. There was something about Woodrue that had a hold over Isley but she didn't realize what was happening. Garten saw through the charade and tried to warn her but Isley dismissed and gaslit her instead, even accusing Garten of being jealous. They eventually broke up over Woodrue.
Many years later, after the zombie incident, Frank learned Hudson University was celebrating Woodrue's achievements and gave them Poison Ivy's email contact figuring she would want to reconnect with her roots after her big failure. Ivy got angry, ripped up the invite, and stated she would never celebrate that man.
