After Guy Gardner was seriously injured, the Guardians of the Universe selected a new backup. They chose John Stewart, an architect from Earth. Jordan was skeptical because he had a history of disobeying superiors. Nonetheless, Stewart was accepted as a Lantern. Together, one their first mission, Stewart refused to help Jordan stop an attack on a politician. Stewart had already figured out the attack was staged. Over his career, Stewart fell in love with fellow Lantern, Katma Tui.
