At a time when only the Guardians of the Universe were the only sentient beings, they built the Green Lantern Battery. The Green Element was housed inside. It was then placed on their homeworld, Oa. Since then, the building is heavily guarded. The Green Battery became the source of energy for all Green Lantern's power rings and contains all knowledge of the universe. A Lantern must think about what they want to know then place their ring inside the Battery. It is possible to be overwhelmed by the sudden burst of information.
Upon Sinestro's return to Oa, he commanded the Yellow Battery to blast the Green Battery. As a result, the Element within was doused with Yellow radiation and made all Green Power Rings powerless. Hal Jordan managed to revive the Battery and defeat Sinestro.
