Dinah Lance grew up in the shadow of her late mother's exploits. Undaunted, Lance trained and became an above average athlete and warrior in her own right. Lance was versed in Boxing and Judo primarily. She was also born with a metagene that gave her the ability to project sonic screams which were nicknamed Canary Cry. As Black Canary, she started a romantic relationship with Green Arrow.
While returning to Star City by airplane, Oliver Queen, Green Arrow, awaited her arrival at the Star City International Airport. He stumbled upon an assassination attempt on the Princess of Vlatava. Green Arrow was rendered unbalanced by Count Vertigo and lay helpless. Black Canary arrived and neutralized Vertigo with her Canary Cry. Green Arrow recovered and took the chance to propose marriage to her. Black Canary accepted.
