Green Arrow, Oliver Queen, began to hear about a famous performing archer named Merlyn the Magnificent. Merlyn challenged Green Arrow to a public archery contest and won. Merlyn had a total of eight duels with Green Arrow and won all of them. He disappeared for years and resurfaced as a member of the League of Assassins. Merlyn was using his skills to kill for money. Since becoming an assassin, Merlyn wears a jet pack underneath his quiver for instant exits once a hit is completed.
Merlyn's latest hit was to assassinate the Princess of Vlatava when she arrived at the Star City International Airport. Luckily, Oliver Queen was at the airport at the same time to pick up his girlfriend, Black Canary. Oliver Queen recognized Merlyn and verified him with facial recognition and the Justice League of America database. When the undercover assassins failed to kill Perdita, Merlyn was greenlit to step in. He managed to wound Arrow in the right knee but drove the two back into the airport terminal. Merlyn advised the client, Count Vertigo, to be notified. The two archers fought their 9th duel. Green Arrow was able to split Merlyn's arrow, graze his cheek, and render him unconscious with knockout gas from the arrow.
