Dr. Thomas Wayne was a gifted surgeon and philanthropist and part of the fifth generation in the Wayne line. The Wayne family fortune was built through industry and real estate centuries ago. Dr. Wayne served as chairman of Wayne Enterprises but preferred to practice medicine at Gotham City Hospital. He often deferred business operations to his board members. Wayne had a vision of helping to cure the suffering of Gotham City and recrited the expertise of fellow board member and friend Lucius Fox to build a public transportation system. Though this project nearly bankrupt Wayne Enterprises, he and the company survived the economic depression unscathed.
Martha Wayne was the heir to the Kane family fortune, who founded a lucrative chemical company. Martha was infamous as a party girl and socialite. Over time, she developed a social awareness and campaigned many charity events. Martha soon met Dr. Thomas Wayne and the two fell in love and had a son named Bruce.
Wayne saved his son Bruce after he fell into a fissure on the Wayne Manor grounds. Later that evening, he, his wife and son attended the opera, Mefistofele. The actors dressed as bat-demons reminded Bruce of his fall and encounter with bats. At his pleading, the Wayne's left the performance early. They were held at gun point by Joe Chill. While trying to protect his wife, Wayne is killed. The murder of the Wayne's sparked Gotham's elite to overcome the current economic depression. With his dying breath, Wayne told his son to not be afraid. Years later, Wayne still recounts the murder and the guilt and anger propelled him to seek justice as Batman.
