Police officer James Gordon decided to transfer from Chicago to Gotham City with his wife Barbara and child. Gordon quickly became infamous for being an honest cop in an otherwise corrupt department. During the night of the murders of Dr. and Mrs. Wayne, he consoled Bruce Wayne. Gordon eventually was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was partnered with Detective Flass, who moonlighted as a low level enforcer for mob lord, Carmine Falcone.
Batman enlisted the help of Sergeant Gordon. Gordon was wary of letting a vigilante loose in Gotham City but saw that Batman served as an important meants to an end that he couldn't accomplish. When Ra's unveiled his plans, Batman convinced Gordon to drive his Batmobile and destroy the monorail before the entire city's water supply was infected. Soon after, Gordon was promoted to Lieutenant and started a secret partnership with Batman.
Gordon formed his own elite squad of handpicked police officers in the Major Crimes Unit. Among them are Detectives Allen and Ramirez. Some of the high profile cases that Batman aided Gordon with were the recapture of Arkham Asylum inmate, Jacob Feely, the mysterious string of kidnappings by a lizard man and stopping the assassin Deadshot. Gordon was quick to warn Batman that their crusade was just beginning and that escalation was a matter of time.
