Wayne Enterprises grew from humble beginnings. Founded by the Wayne family in the 17th century as Wayne Corp., a merchant house, it grew into a multinational conglomerate worth billions. The company branched off into every possible industry such as Technology, Bioscience, Applied Science, Shipping, Medical and Electronics. Dr. Thomas Wayne served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors until his murder. William Earle assumed the position and promised Bruce Wayne he would take control when he was ready. However, when Wayne traveled the world and was seemingly lost, Earle declared him legally dead and proceeded to administer his own goals. Earle planned on taking Wayne Enterprises public and take on projects that the late Dr. Wayne may have objected to.
Bruce Wayne suddenly reappeared and instead of re-taking his company, sought to work in the Applied Sciences division. All the while, through trusts and not-for-profits, Wayne bought up enough shares of Wayne Enterprises to become majority stockholder. He ousted Earle and replaced him with long-time friend of the Wayne family, Lucius Fox as CEO.
