When Batman debuted, he sought to curb the flow of drugs into Gotham City. Top mob lord, Carmine Falcone was his prime target. On the night of a shipment, Batman broke up the delivery and captured Falcone. He tied Falcone to a searchlight and broadcast it to the police, which created a crude bat-like shape in the night sky. Despite Batman arriving in Lieutenant Gordon's office on the spot or a gift in the form of a wireless relay, Gordon preferred a more direct method of contact with Batman. Atop Gotham City Police Department Headquarters, a Klieg searchlight was modified with the symbol of Batman and used only during a high profile case that warranted Batman's assistance.
