As head of the Applied Sciences division in Wayne Enterprises, Lucius Fox engineered a series of daring prototypes, often for military use. However, they were all shelved and lay untouched until years later when Bruce Wayne incorporated them into Batman's arsenal. One such prototype was the Tumbler. The Tumbler was originally a bridging vehicle used during combat. It would jump a river with towing cables and secure a bridge. The Tumbler's boost system creates a rampless jump.
After a paint job, the Tumbler was used as Batman's mode of transportation, informally the Batmobile. While Batman confronted Ra's al Ghul, Sergeat Jim Gordon was left to drive the Batmobile and destroy the monorail system before it contaminated the city water supply. The seating position shifts to allow the driver to lay on their stomach and activate offensive capabilities.
