Bruce Wayne is the son of Dr. Thomas and Martha Wayne. His father founded one of the largest corporations, Wayne Enterprises and lived well. At age eight, while playing with a servant's daughter, Rachel Dawes, Wayne fell into a well on the Wayne Manor grounds. He was scared when his landing startled a nest of bats. Later that day, the family of three attended an opera performance which included actors dressed as bats. Wayne urged his father to leave the opera early. While they were on their way, the Wayne's were approached by a man named Joe Chill. Chill robbed them and in the scuffle shot Dr. and Mrs. Wayne dead. Only Wayne's anger outweighed his guilt.

For the next 10 years, Alfred Pennyworth, the family butler, did his best to raise Wayne. Wayne then began to attend Princeton in his college years. It wasn't until the 14th anniversary of the Wayne's deaths, a public hearing for Joe Chill was held. He entered a plea bargain and testified against Carmine Falcone, a noted gang lord. Wayne almost brought himself to shooting Chill but a hired gun beat him to it.

He decided to set out to understand the world of criminals and traveled the world for seven years. He traveled to notable places such as Japan to study Juijitsu, China for various forms of Kung Fu, Australia for boomerangs, South America for Bolas and India for Bhusara. Wayne came to discover that fear was a drive to do both good and terrible things but he wouldn't kill. He saw his father's compassion as a line that separates the two.

While in China, Wayne was caught by police and sent to a prison. He was eventually contacted by Ra's al Ghul to join his mission of true justice. He was prompted to go to Bhutan and search the mountains for a rare blue flower on the eastern slopes. Wayne then hiked further and found Ra's al Ghul's sanctuary. He was taught to devote himself to an ideal so he could better learn patience, agility, deception, theatrics and the power to fight 600 men. Wayne and Ra's came to an ideological conflict and parted ways.

He returned to Gotham City amid plans by the Board of Chairmen to take Wayne Enterprises public. Wayne took an immediate interest in the Applied Sciences division and adapted many of its shelved prototypes for his arsenal as Batman.

As Batman, his first goal was to route out the flow of drugs in Gotham. In order to gain leverage on the corrupt Judge Raden, Batman handed incriminating evidence to the District Attorney's Rachel Dawson. After interrogating a low level enforcer, attacking a shipment and leaving Falcone for the police, Batman's search led him to the Narrows. He encountered Dr. Crane and was doused in a weaponized hallucinogen. The drug problem soon unraveled into a conspiracy created by Ra's al Ghul to cleanse Gotham City of crime. The inmates of Arkham Asylum overran the Narrows, forcing the police to quarantine the island. With Sergeant Gordon's help, Batman defeated Ra's and destroyed the city's monorail before Dr. Crane's toxin could be added to the water supply.

Wayne meanwhile bought up majority shares of Wayne Enterprises through charitable organizations and trusts. He quickly replaced Bill Earle, a force on the Board, with former Applied Sciences head, Lucius Fox. Fox functioned as Wayne's second in command. Batman soon became an urban legend. Some speculated he didn't even exist but others saw him as a monster.

Batman set out to recapture inmates of Arkham Asylum. The more high profile inmates were easier to locate. One Jacob Feely has an M.O. of using high technology to stage robberies. Batman gave chase throughout the city and eventually captured Feely thanks to a young bystander. At the same time, Batman became embroiled in a gang war between Sal Maroni and the Russian, to consolidate the power vacuum left by Falcone. While investigating a string of high profile kidnappings, Batman encountered two other Arkham Asylum figures, the former administrator Dr. Crane, now Scarecrow, and anotehr escapee, Killer Croc. The Russian later hired the assassin Deadshot to kill Batman who failed. After each trial, Batman gained a further understanding of what it meant to put his life on the line of his cause.
