Valentina Guerra is the older step sister of Hernan Guerra, later known as Superman. She was four years older but regarded Hernan as her older brother and best friend. When Hernan was younger, he would be haunted by dreams of Krypton's destruction. He would wake up and ask Valentina to hold him. By the time he was seven or eight, Hernan became too proud to admit his fears. Valentina dreamed of becoming a teacher, getting married, have four children, and live in a beautiful house. One day, despite her fear of heights, climbed a tree when Hernan flew up and challenged her. He shook the tree with the wave of his hand just to give her a little scare but Valentina fell. As a result, she was paralyzed. Neither told their parents what happened that day. Ashamed, Hernan refused to use his powers and shut himself off from everyone. Hernan's act of indifference only hurt Valentina more because it felt like she didn't have a brother anymore.

Valentine was horrified when Hernan simply let a plane crash. It was then she knew the darkness in his soul was consuming him piece by piece. After Hernan shot a rowdy drunk in town with his heat vision, the sheriff formed a posse and demanded Hernan. A stray bullet almost hit Valentina. Hernan had enough and used his strength to create a shockwave and knock them off their feet. Valentina ordered Hernan to stop or she would disown him. Their father went into a rage and demanded he leave. For years, Hernan traveled the world and infrequently wrote letters to Valentina. At some point, she married a mechanic, went to school to earn a G.E.D., and had a child. Hernan returned to see his family. After visiting his adoptive mother's grave and making amends with his adoptive father, Manuel, Hernan visited Valentina. She admitted she still believed in her American dream and that Hernan was a hero. While she didn't approve of his methods, Valentina believed a dark world needed a man who understood that darkness to make a better one. She prayed everyday he would step into his destiny and find the light she always saw in his heart.
