Manuel Guerra is the adoptive father of Hernan Guerra, later known as Superman. He has a hot temper and a huge heart. While he threatens to, he never once hit his children and forgave them for their transgressions. He and his wife Rosa found a baby in a space ship in the middle of the Arizona desert. They hid from the military that arrived soon after to secure the ship. Manuel watched them and waited. He heard Dr. Lex Luthor give orders to have the area searched. He went to Rosa and the baby. They hid behind a boulder and waited for troops to walk past them. They made a run for it and avoided detection. They kept the infant as their son and named him Hernan. They went to America as migrant workers so their children could have a better life. After Hernan began displaying abilities, Manuel made him promise to not use them.
One day, during a 500 mile drive, Manuel sighted a plane in trouble. He told Hernan to save the plane. Hernan reminded Manuel of his promise not to use his powers. Manuel was horrified and watched as the plane crashed. After Hernan, at age 18, accidentally used heat vision on a drunk in town, Manuel tried to calm the posse down. The sheriff demanded Hernan. After Hernan used his powers to scare off the posse, Manuel called him a monster and a curse on their family. Manuel demanded Hernan to leave. Years later, the two made amends at Rosa's grave.
