Krypton is a planet home to an advanced civilization compared to that of Earth. General Zod needed energy to power his war machine to take over the planet and execute his vision for the future of Krypton. He ignored warnings from everyone in the scientific community, even leading scientist Jor-El. He discounted their calculations as inconclusive and useless and continued drilling into the planet's core to tap its energy. Jor-El allied with the ruling council rather than Zod. Zod's actions doomed the planet. Jor-El and his wife Lara quickly began work on an Incubator Pod in which to gestate their child and send into space to find a habitable planet. Earthquakes jolted the planet as it neared its end. A disturbance with a seismic magnitude of 9.8 was generated just as Jor-El finished setting Lara's egg in the pod. Before he could add his genetic code, Jor-El's hand was shot off by Zod. He heard rumors of the pod and stormed Jor-El's home with a small force.
General Zod decided the last child of Krypton would be his and submitted his genetic code. The Incubator Pod accepted it and returned to the interior of the ship. Just before the planet was destroyed by a cataclysmic implosion, the ship left the planet. The child of Zod and Lara gestated in an artificial womb and grew as the ship eventually made its way to Earth and landed in the Arizona desert. In his youth, Hernan Guerra had a recurring dream about the departure unaware of his true origins. Over the decades, Dr. Lex Luthor downloaded files from the ship and eventually used Kryptonian science to build himself a ship that would aid him in mapping the universe. Superman also utilized Kryptonian science to construct generators that powered the Tower of Justice and a force field to protect it. A week after Dr. Will Magnus was defeated, Luthor returned the ship files to Superman and implored him to apply Kryptonian sciences to Earth and revolutionize several fields like medicine, engineering, and physics.
