Gotham University is a collegiate institute located in Gotham City and is renowned for its prestigious science department. One of the more famous personalities on the faculty was Dr. Lex Luthor. Before turning into a vampire and becoming Batman, Kirk Langstrom was a student at the University. For his prior awards, Langstrom was awarded a scholarship to the University. He studied with Luthor for three years. During his time there, Langstrom observed constant talk of Jackson Alpert. People thought Alpert was either a visionary or a lunatic but everyone was a little jealous of his genius. On graduation day, Dr. Luthor addressed his eight top students, referred informally as "Luthor's boys," and told them they were the best their generation had to offer and warned them not to squander their talents. He implored them to be brazen and bold. The world needed chance and they were among the few who could make that happen. Kirk Langstrom opted to spend the rest of his day finishing his lab work. Will Magnus and Tina found Langstrom and woke him up several hours later to go to the party.

Langstrom wanted to keep working on his Bat Venom project since the coefficient on the blood coagulants were almost matching. Tina convinced him to take a break and go to the party with them. It turned out that Crazy Ivy brought her "homegrown" to the festivities. Upon returning home, Langstrom saw Magnus' project and realized he could use nanites to finish his Bat Venom. Langstrom collapsed and was taken to the hospital. His cancer was getting worse. Magnus looked at his research and decided to help implement his nanites. Five days later, they had one successful test subject - a mouse named Jerry. His agglutination was normal and erythrocyte count was still up. With time running out, Langstrom decided to inject himself. Unable to do it himself, Magnus injected Langstrom. He turned into a vampiric being, trashed his bedroom, and went out the window.

Years later, after interrogating former Hairies across the nation, Batman returned to Gotham and sneaked onto campus. He bypassed Luthor's security measures and approached Luthor in a lecture hall. Batman revealed his identity and connection to Luthor then asked for help with stopping Alpert and his Forever People. Luthor felt the bigger threat was posed by Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman. Luthor tasered Batman after he got too close but offered to find a cure if he stayed. At some point, Dr. Silas Stone was a visiting professor at Gotham University's Physics Department. The night after Stone's murder, Batman sneaked into his office and copied his computer files. He found an email about a classified government project named Fair Play. He noticed Stone and the other two murdered scientists Victor Fries and Ray Palmer were on the CC list. John Henry Irons, T.O. Morrow, Michael Holt, Pat Dugan, Emil Hamilton, Karen Beecher, Thaddeus Sivana, Kimiyo Hoshi, Stephen Shin, and Will Magnus were the others on the list. He looked at one of Stone's frames and remembered himself, Magnus, and six of the other scientists were part of a clique known as "Luthor's boys."
