Gotham City is an American city infamous for crime and corruption. Radiant with evil. In recent times, it is infested with a criminal organization led by Lew Moxon and psychopathic serial killers like Harlequin. After Kirk Langstrom embraced what his cure of cancer did to him, he hid his face with a ski mask and attacked the Gotham underworld over a period of several weeks. The news media named him Batman but wondered if he was a monster or savior. He was connected to the murderers of seven criminals killed in the Southside and was credited with scaring a syndicate out of Crime Alley. Batman murdered Lew Moxon and his lieutenant Joe Chill on the night of a meeting of all crime families. For weeks, Batman fixated on Moxon's wife and son, Angela and Jeremy, trying to understand how they could have loved such a monster. Weeks passed, and there was a war to fill the power vacuum left by Moxon. It turned out the two principal crime lords in contention were Jeremy Moxon and an undead Joe Chill, who absorbed the antibodies of Batman and rose from his grave. Batman ended the war and killed both.

Batman continued to fight crime in his own way. Reports of him remained vague and confused. The only thing concrete was the trail of bodies left in his wake. Some believed he was a mad dog that needed to be put down. Batman entered the home of Adrian Jacobs and rescued his latest victim, an eight year old girl named Anna Hernandez. He fed on Jacobs then returned Hernandez to her mother. Batman continued to struggle with killing to survive and hold back his impulses. Superman arrived in Gotham and found Batman. After calming him down, Superman gave him a vial of blood. Superman then asked Batman what he knew about Jackson Alpert. Batman recalled Alpert was a constant topic of discussion at Gotham University. Batman made a rare departure from Gotham to investigate Alpert while Superman went to the Eternity Institute.
