Bear is one of the wealthy who were the first to become one of Jackson Alpert's Forever People. Originally, he was a native of Mumbai. After being upgraded, he took the name Bear. At the Eternity Institute, Bear dined with his bretheren, Alpert, Superman, and Wonder Woman.

As the Forever People began to set up floating citadels above their home cities, Bear set his up above Mumbai. Bear emerged the victor in the Forever People's civil war. The others gathered above Mumbai and at least pretended to accept him as their leader. Bear saw a future they would control but noted the ordinary ones would not understand their vision. When Superman and Wonder Woman arrived, Bear called his people off and recognized them as the first of their kind. He mused they would be valuable advisors because of their compassion for the ordinary people. Wonder Woman's stepped forward and gave a speech that offered them to relocate to a new planet so they could grow into the fullness of their gifts then return one day to aid mankind. Bear was amused and reiterated the Forever People were the endpoint of human evolution. He saw the advice as jealousy. Superman had enough and slammed the floor. Bear ordered his troops to take them. After Superman killed Serifan with heat vision, Bear became enraged and fought Superman one on one.

At first, their battle took place in the sky then shifted to the streets of Mumbai. Dozens were killed and hundreds were seriously injured as a result of the flying rubble and collapsing buildings. Bear managed to defeat Superman. After mocking him, Bear spit on him and tossed him aside. Batman jumped on Bear's back and bit his neck. Annoyed, Bear declared the wound would instantly heal and his vampiric toxins would be neutralized. However, Batman laced his fangs with an antidote to Alpert's Forever Formula. Bear began to suffer atrophy and fell into a coma. He was taken back to the Eternity Institute, placed in a containment chamber, later reverted to normal, and was studied by an international task force.
