Ysmault is a hellish planet located in Space Sector 2814 and ruled by a collective of demons named the Empire of Tears. Over 700 years ago, the Five Inversions were imprisoned on Ysmault. In recent times, a ship crashed on the planet. One of the Inversions, Atrocitus, escaped his prison cell, killed the crew, repaired the ship, and set out to hunt and kill Green Lanterns. A week later, Atrocitus faced Abin Sur and Sinestro. Unable to win, Atrocitus attempted to break Sur's power battery and destroy the city while he escaped. Sur recovered the battery and recharged his ring, then neutralized Atrocitus. Sur escorted him back to Ysmault and sealed him back in his cell. During the imprisonment, Atrocitus told Abin Sur about his vision of the war of light.
