Oa is one of the oldest planets in the universe. After the Maltusians evolved, the immigrated to Oa, a lifeless desert planet, and used it for their base of operations as the Guardians of the Universe. Oa also serves as headquarters for the Green Lantern Corps, houses the Central Power Battery, Book of Oa, and many other important documents and artifacts. Eons later, Krona returned to the positive matter universe intent on destroying Oa. The Guardians ordered an evacuation of the planet and relocated possessions to the Broome-Kane star cluster. During battle, Arisia suggested the Corps slam Oa into Krona and neutralize him. The gambit worked. Without a planet, the Guardians and Corps set up a temporary base on Mogo. Soon enough, the Green Lantern Corps set off to build a new Oa.
