The power rings of the Green Lantern Corps are considered to be the most powerful weapon in the universe. Thousands of years ago, the Guardians of the Universe forged this technology in their campaign to police the known 3600 space sectors. It is said they gathered the light and sought a solution to the universe's suffering. Four green power rings were created. The first Lantern, Avra, mastered the power of will from which the rings were forged. Since then, hundreds then thousands more rings were made. Those who are chosen to wield a ring are usually at the scrutiny of the Guardians. The power of the rings are limited only by the willpower and concentration of its user. This willpower is most important in the generation of electromagnetic solid light constructs that act as defensive and offensive measures of the Green Lantern.

In addition, the rings provide its user's flight, personal force fields, uniforms, energy scanning, language translation, recorders, storage, and communication. It also follows voice commands and can be summoned remotely. These features lead many, including Sinestro, to conclude that the ring contains a highly advanced computer program based on morality and seeks out those with the ability to overcome great fear. As a failsafe, when a Green Lantern is killed in action, the ring flies back to Oa to the Guardians. This can be circumvented if the Green Lantern orders the ring to find a successor.

Despite its omnipotence, the rings have its share of weaknesses. The power rings can hold a full charge for 24 hours then must be recharged by the Green Lantern Battery. After inserting the ring into the battery, the Green Lantern counts the time needed for a full charge by reciting the Green Lantern Oath. The Battery located at headquarters on planet Oa. As a safeguard, the Guardians also made sure the rings had a flaw built in to each ring, they are unable to directly affect the color yellow. This ultimately prevented any one Green Lantern from becoming too powerful and to stretch their range of imagination in hostile situations. Since the ring is dependant on the user's willpower, telepathic attacks on the user can render the ring useless.
