Long ago, the rogue robot enforcers known as Manhunters went on a rampage through Green Lantern Space Sector 666. Only five natives survived the massacre and they formed the Five Inversions, evolving into a terrorist group. With Atrocitus as their leader, the Inversions swore to destroy the Guardians of the Universe and anyone who served them. Over time, they accumulated a massive domain named the Empire of Tears. The Guardians had enough and imprisoned the Inversions in their own capital Ysmault.
Over 700 years later, a ship crashed on Ysmault. Atrocitus broke free of his prison, killed the crew, repaired the ship, and left Ysmault. He immediately began to hunt and kill Green Lanterns. Through either some form of precognition or a means of locking onto the power ring's energy signature, Atrocitus killed three Lanterns. His fourth target was Abin Sur. He made his move when Sur let his guard down to recharge his ring. Sinestro intervened.
Atrocitus created a diversion by breaking Sur's power battery and attempted to return to his ship. Sur beat him to the ship and smashed him unconscious with a giant Lantern construct. He elected to return Atrocitus to Ysmault alone while Sinestro returned to patrol his sector. While repairing Atrocitus' cell, Sur listened to Atrocitus' vision of the future, Sur's ring would fail him in his most desperate hour and Sinestro would unite the universe's vilest beings into a corps a fear then destroy the Green Lantern Corps and Guardians of the Universe. Sur scoffed at the notion and sealed up Atrocitus.
