Kryptonite is irradiated remnants of Krypton, Superman's home planet. Pieces of Kryptonite made its way to Earth where Superman's enemies, namely Lex Luthor, figured out it was the most efficient means at destroying the Man of Steel. Exposed to any, Superman is immediately weakened, immobilized and can even die after long enough exposure. Solomon Grundy found Kryptonite while trolling around in Slaughter Swamp. Strapped for cash, the Joker tried to sell it to Lex Luthor for 1 billion dollars but Luthor found the price too excessive. The Kryptonite was later stored at the base of the containment chamber Superman was imprisoned in then kept in the chest cavity of Luthor's giant mechanical suit. After the Super Friends defeated Luthor, Aquaman hid the Kryptonite back in the Slaughter Swamp. A large amoeba happily ate it.
