Slade Wilson was a celebrated war hero in America. With his wife, Lillian, he raised a daughter they named Rose. During a mission, Wilson lost vision in his left eye and suffered an undisclosed injury that forces him to use a cane. Years later, he made a bid for the presidency and won. However, the Crime Syndicate took power. Lillian Wilson was executed by Ultraman as a symbol of their intentions. With only the backing of nuclear warheads and a desire to avoid bloodshed, President Wilson brokered a fragile peace. As a measure of last resort, Wilson managed to discover where the Syndicate's secret base was, on the Moon.
Some time later, Rose Wilson began to publicly speak out against the Syndicate and the appearance of a new Justice League began to undermine Wilson's delicate balance. When Ultraman and Jimmy Olsen were defeated by Alexander Luthor and Superman, he dispatched the United States Secret Service to summon them to the White House. Wilson admonished the League and revealed he already ordered Ultraman's release. Despite the League's promise, he was skeptical and didn't want to risk millions of lives. Rose Wilson overheard the conversation and it put a greater strain on their relationship. J'Onn J'Onzz admired Wilson, as they both came to hold life dear after seeing the atrocities of war.
A short time later, Ultraman landed on the White House lawn and threatened to kill Wilson's daughter if he didn't pacify her. When he learned Archer, one of the Syndicate's Made Men, attempted to assassinate her, President Wilson ordered a strike force of United States Marine Corps and led them to the Moon with J'Onzz and several nuclear warheads. They took Ultraman, Superwoman, and Power Ring into custody. Upon returning to Earth, he ordered the National Guard to assist local law enforcement in arresting any criminal associated with the Crime Syndicate. Wilson also repaired his relationship with Rose.
