On Mars, the Ma'aleca'andrans settled and established a prosperous and advanced civilization. From what is known, they developed technology far superior from that of Earth and had a polytheistic religion that included the God of Life and Lord of Dreams, all below the Creator God.
The peaceful Ma'aleca'andrans became known as the Green Martians, while the savage and war-like ones were the White Martians. Both groups were always at odds with each other. Ultimately, the White Martians gained the upper hand and killed all of the Green Martians except for their greatest warrior, J'onn J'Onzz.
