Saul Erdel was fascinated by the prospect of meeting other life in the universe. Influenced by the likes of Ray Bradbury, Edgar Rice Burroughs, John Carter, and Buck Rogers, Erdel forgoed a formal education and spent 30 years trying to find a way to explore other worlds. Liking the sound of it, he began to refer to himself as a doctor. Based in Middelton, Denver, Colorado with his cat, Miles, he cobbled together various pieces of technology to create a transmitter probe. Erdel was unaware some of the pieces were ancient Martian technology.
One night, on a whim, Erdel pointed his probe towards Mars and activated it. He teleported J'onn J'Onzz, the last Martian, into his cabin. The two bonded over a period of time through a telepathic mind-link. Inspired by Erdel's goodness and sense of heroism, J'Onzz set out to become one of Earth's defenders.
