Wally West is the son of Rudy and Mary West. Born and raised in Blue Valley, Nebraska, West became an avid fan of the area's local hero, the Flash. However, Rudy West tried to steer his son towards a normal life. At age 10, West visited his Aunt Iris in Central City. Her boyfriend, Barry Allen, agreed to introduce West to the Flash. When West asked the Flash how he got his powers, the hero set up his lab just like that fateful night but thought the odds of lightning striking it were high. But all of a sudden, a bolt of lightning struck the chemicals and granted West the same powers as the Flash. Impressed, the Flash made him his sidekick, Kid Flash.
The Flash taught his protege how to use his powers, including how to properly vibrate his molecules through solid objects, and how to be a hero. A year later, a second lightning bolt struck Kid Flash and changed his costume's color scheme to a dominant yellow pattern. Eventually, he decided to strike out alone and worked solo and referred to himself as "The Fastest Boy Alive." However, boys grow up and he inherited the mantle of the Flash. He then helped found the Justice League. In opposition to Batman, the Flash was an open and honest individual, often saying what was on his mind. Batman's secretive nature was daunting to the Flash and made him insecure around the Dark Knight. He was further incensed when Batman used him to test the Watchtower's teleporter.
After teleporting to a parallel Earth on a mission to defeat the Crime Syndicate, the Flash stretched out Extruded Man. With a formal plan in play, Flash and Martian Manhunter attacked a smuggling operation. Flash destroyed the shipping crate holding several warheads then dropped off Scream Queen into the nearby harbor before she could kill Manhunter. In the final battle against the Syndicate, Flash saved Batman's life from his evil analogue, Johnny Quick. After Owlman's true goal was revealed, Batman declined the Flash's offer to generate the needed vibrational speed to go after the insane villain. Instead, Johnny Quick volunteered. After the ordeal, Quick was reduced to an old man and died. The Flash realized why Batman didn't want him in the first place and perhaps an unspoken respect Batman had for him.
