Dr. William Magnus is a scientist and engineer with a specialty in artificial intelligence. In the 1960s, Dr. Magnus discussed G.I. Robot with General King during a publicity tour for the military. Magnus preferred "AI system" over the term "robot." Magnus revealed he was always fascinated with the old film of G.I. in combat but admitted he only just realized he has some type of vague self-awareness and was impressed. King revealed they were retiring him from the stage and thought he could be of use to Magnus and his studies. Magnus agreed. G.I. Robot was transferred to Magnus's laboratory and was partially disassembled. He awoke and saluted Magnus. Magnus introduced himself. G.I. asked him if he was a Nazi. Magnus replied he was not. G.I. was disappointed and asked where the rest of his body was. Magnus revealed he was studying him and would piece him back together later, perhaps with a few improvements if he was feeling generous. He told G.I. he was truly remarkable work, especially for 1943.

G.I. asked if there were Nazis nearby. Magnus noticed how preoccupied he was with Nazis. G.I. stated he was created with the sole mandate to kill Nazis and their allies. Magnus asked him if he wanted to kill Nazis. G.I. replied what he wants was irrelevant and his directive is all that matters. Magnus asked him if he, theoretically, had no directive, what would he desire. G.I. thought about it then revealed someday, he would like with be reunited with Easy Company and kill Nazis with them. He asked Magnus if he'd seen them. Magnus lit his pipe and told him he had not and the War was 20 years ago. G.I. listed off their names but none rang any bells with Magnus. He promised he was going to help him a great deal. G.I. asked if was going to help him kill Nazis. Magnus clarified studying him would aid in the creation of the next wave of automatons. He looked at a schematic.
