Dr. Edward and Lily Mazursky had a daughter in Star City but she was born with her lungs mostly outside of her body. The obstetrician admitted she didn't know how long she could keep her alive but knew Dr. Mazursky was one of the world's foremost scientists and thought he might be able to develop a way to keep her alive. He named his daughter Nina. A machine was created to help her breathing. It was worn like a harness but it was heavy. If she fell on her back, she was stuck and someone else had to help her up. Lily Mazursky never adapted to her daughter's situation and was overwhelmed. She cried in the kitchen. Dr. Mazursky tried to talk to her but she believed they made a mistake and should have taken her off the machines at the hospital. He refused to accept that and believed their daughter was strong enough to handle whatever he built for her. She told him Nina was his and she didn't even look at her. He contended she didn't because she didn't look at her. She didn't like his implications. He called Nina an intuitive child and she could sense things.
Lily confessed it was true. She told him she loved him but he was torturing all three of them. She left to go stay with her mother. Some time later, Dr. Mazursky developed a new treatment that could cure Nina once and for all. He told her about it on a walk in the neighborhood. The treatment was a series of injections that would transform her DNA to help her breathe despite the fluid in her lungs. The infusion with elements of aquatic animals triggered a mutation and Nina was transformed into an amphibious form and began to asphyxiate. Dr. Mazursky realized she could only breathe underwater and rushed her to a sink then filled it to the top with water. Nina called him "daddy." She was home schooled until her teens. Dr. Mazursky believed she was better off attending school and she needed to socialize with other children. He chose Emberton Prep. They met with Principal Gale. He explained her origins. Gale knew of his work in bio genetics and commended him for the genetically engineered rice that helped feed nations. He touted Nina being fluent in four languages and well versed in Shakespeare and Calculus. Gale accepted her into the school. He told Nina to thank her. She did.
After enduring bullying on a constant basis, she left a letter to her father, telling him she loved him but didn't want to be a burden anymore, and ran away from home. Three years later, she was captured by animal control experts. Police officers held the crowd back but Dr. Mazursky broke through, shoved an officer, and went up to her, telling her she was the greatest gift to him. He kept ignoring the officers and was shot in the back. He died in front of her. She was placed in a tank of water screaming and driven away.
