The Shawl of Magdalene is a mystical object that can heal the living despite its modest appearance as a common looking piece of cloth. It was in the possession of the Church of St. Dumas for some time. In a move of desperation, Mr. Freeze procured the services of the Penguin to steal the Shawl so he could return Nora Fries back to life after her death. Penguin hired Catwoman to conduct the theft. She was successful but the Order of St. Dumas sent their champion Azrael to recover it and punish her. Azrael beat information out of Penguin then went to an abandoned ice rink named Iceland. He found the Shawl of Magdalene draped over the corpse of Nora Fries. Mr. Freeze doubted Azrael's sympathy and wouldn't admit the truth that the Shawl didn't work on the dead. Freeze stated it will and it must because he wasn't losing her again. He then froze Azrael with his gun. Batman arrived later on and neutralized Freeze then used the Shawl to save Azrael's life. They both took it back to the Church of St. Dumas.
