Bruce Wayne began dating a younger debutante named Cassie Kendall during college after they met at a winter formal. He thought they were exclusive and almost gave up his promise to his late parents but they ultimately broke up. He met Andrea Beaumont soon after. After being Batman for less than a year, the public still didn't know what to make of him and were scared but he was still more rumor than truth. That changed when he saved a photographer from two of Carmine Falcone's men who were sent to destroy his film after he snapped a photo of the mob boss. Batman was photographed during the battle and made the front page story. City councilman Emerson Mayfield used fears of Batman to weaken the police department's reputation and bring up a need for new leadership to restore law order. Mayfield easily won the mayoral election and quickly installed his own private army, M-Force, under the guise of an elite paramilitary squad akin to a S.W.A.T. team to declare war on crime.

The M-Force murdered criminals left and right and took their stolen gains, added to Mayfield's slush funds. Batman located the Z Street Gang a few days after they stole $800,000 from Gotham National. M-Force got there first. He intervened and saved the life of one gangster held at gun point. Thanks to well place smoke pellets, he eluded the rest of M-Force and left the scene with the gangster. At 3 am that night, Batman followed Shotgun to a meeting with Mayfield. Shotgun presented a briefcase filled with $400,000, half of what the Z Street Gang stole from the bank. He reported the rest was turned over to the police under the guise of the rest already having been distributed among the gang. Batman set up a miniature projector displaying an image of himself to distract the pair. Shotgun opened fire while Batman stole the briefcase and left. The money was turned over to Gordon. Mayfield held a press conference condemning Batman. He admitted some in City Hall believed Batman was on their side.

Summer Gleeson asked him if he agreed. Mayfield speculated he was an equal participant of the bank robbery, if not its mastermind, and turned in the money to save his own skin. Batman eavesdropped on a window ledge outside the room. After the press conference, Mayfield told Shotgun to put the team on high alert until Batman was a corpse. Batman shadowed Mayfield relentlessly and used every tool in his arsenal to monitor his movements like cameras and wiretaps. He also shook down criminals for intel. Mayfield got wise to Batman and set up a trap at the old Gotham County Jail then spread false info he and M-Force were planning something big at the jail. Batman arrived two hours before the supposed midnight meeting and was immediately shot at. He ran right into their trap and an electrified cell door was closed on him. Mayfield told the M-Force they just needed to have the right bait to catch a troublesome bat and he was just a man in a costume. Mayfield stopped himself and commended Batman for being a highly skilled individual with a great passion.

Mayfield proposed a truce and even offered to join forces for their mutual profit. Batman refused to work for him. Mayfield was disappointed, told the M-Force to carry on and he was never there, and left. After Mayfield left, Batman fired his grappling gun and reeled in a squad member into the cell door. The sustained charge shorted out the prison's faulty electrical system and the door fell on several of M-Force. Batman applied smoke pellets and started to take each one down but watched as they all died in crossfire.

Batman notified Gordon then confronted Mayfield in his home. He burst in through a window. Mayfield tried to claim he was with his accountant all night but watched as Chapell ran out of the room. He announced the M-Force killed themselves in a crossfire and he had a counter-offer. He told Mayfield to resign. Mayfield was aghast and declared he was a Mayfield, his ancestors built Gotham, and the Mayor's Office was his by right. He pointed out everything Batman just said was hearsay in court and he couldn't touch him. Batman countered he could outside of court. Mayfield caved and they made a deal. On the day of his resignation, Mayfield proclaimed the memory of M-Force's heroic sacrifice on the war on crime would live on forever in the people's hearts. He announced the strain of public life took a toll on his health and he had to step down to preserve it. As part of the deal, Mayfield retreated to his family's estate down the coast and was never heard from again.

Deeply troubled by the accidental death of a gang member, Batman tracked The Wolves, the gang, to their watering hole, The Den. However, a fight was already in progress inside. A young boy wearing a hoodie and domino mask to hide his identity was fighting at least 12 members of the Wolves, all nearly twice his age, and was winning. The boy socked Alpha, the gang leader, as Batman entered. The boy picked up a dropped handgun but Batman took it away from him before he could use it.

Batman learned the boy was named Jason Todd and he was the younger brother of the gang member who died. He realized Batman was a kindred spirit and an idol to model himself after. Not long after that, Bruce Wayne decided to move Jason Todd to Wayne Manor, perhaps in part to fill the void left by Dick Grayson. Although Barbara Gordon's presence was sparse at the time, she shared Alfred Pennyworth's opinion that despite Wayne's best intentions, they thought Todd's admittance to the Batcave was premature. Jason Todd's training sessions exhibited his amazing energy and skill levels but also his unfettered ferocity. Although he was the equal of Grayson at his age, Todd showed signs of anger issues. He also looked at the Robin suit daily and obsessively. Pennyworth shared his concern with Batman. Batman assured Pennyworth he had it under control and they already had long discussions on the matter. Jason Todd would become Robin when Batman decided he was ready. That evening, Todd took the suit of its case without permission and joined a surprised Batman in a battle with Firefly.

Batman and the new Robin defeated Firefly. However, Batman was infuriated that Todd defiantly broke the rules. They argued back at the Batcave. Alfred Pennyworth set himself between them and demanded they either come to an understanding or walk away from the life forever. Cooler heads prevailed. Jason Todd stated his case from the heart. He told Batman he wasn't Dick Grayson, he couldn't be and wouldn't be. He swore to honor Batman's trust and asked for a chance. Batman accepted and they shook hands. The new partnership started off promisingly enough. Robin took his cues from Batman when it came to typical criminals. However, whenever a case involved a costumed villain, Robin took an alarming amount of zeal in doling out punishment to them. The more ruthless they were, the more determined Robin was to issue payback in kind. Even after Robin punched Scarecrow out of a building, Batman refused to accept the truth and played if off as exposure to Fear Toxin set off an extreme "fight or flight" response.

Alfred Pennyworth persisted that Jason Todd wasn't ready to be Robin but Batman told him to drop it. Two hours later, Pennyworth presented an analysis of Todd's Robin costume found no trace of the toxin. Batman revealed the conducted the same test an hour ago and got the same result. Jason Todd heard everything and became enraged that no one trusted him from the start. He declared he was leaving and grabbed his Robin suit. Batman tried to go to him but Todd drop kicked him. Batman insisted he had to be sure for all their sakes. Todd told him he wouldn't have to worry anymore then left the Batcave with a Batcycle. Robin started a campaign of brutality against criminals, even gunning Killer Croc off a battleship. No one knew Robin was acting on his own so the press hammered away at Batman's reputation and, by implication, Commissioner Gordon's. It became clear Batman had to act or the police would end it on their own. Batman scoured every square foot of Gotham but Robin stayed one step ahead.

Batman found Sid the Squid and hung him up off the top of a building near 3 in the morning. Sid insisted he had no idea where Robin was. Batman pressed him for anything he heard. Sid recalled Robin could learn some manners. Batman let go of his tie and he swung around. Sid panicked and confessed he heard the Joker was Robin's next target. Robin was beaten to death by the Joker. Batman found the warehouse Joker and Harley were holed up in. He was on the roof when he observed Harley being carried outside by two goons. He pounced on them. Harley volunteered to help Batman stop the Joker but he elected to leave her handcuffed outside. Joker announced Robin as the failed hero who tried to bring down the bad guys, a lame joke that was about to be erased. Batman arrived and objected. Joker tried to get Batman to admit Robin was asking for it. Batman ordered him to get away from Robin. Joker ordered his goons to open fire and assured them the tanks only contained Hydrogen so they wouldn't explode. He had it confused with Helium and they all exploded.

Joker ran for his car but the explosions launched it in the air and it landed on him. Batman freed Robin. Robin pleaded with him to end the Joker for him, for everyone he's hurt, and for everyone he's going to hurt if he lives. Batman told him they can't become what he is. Robin told him he would never become the Joker. He handed Batman the crowbar. To Robin's dismay, Batman used the crowbar to pry the car away from Joker. He tossed the unconscious Joker over his shoulder. Robin pleaded with him not to save Joker and used some tanks to stand up. Robin was caught up in another explosion. Batman ran Joker outside then returned and searched the rubble in vain. He dug through the wreckage until his hands bled but only found a piece of Robin's costume. Batman returned to the warehouse for weeks looking for a clue that would point to Robin's survival. After months of searching, Batman was unable to find his body and accepted the bitter truth that Robin was gone.

Scarface threatened Gotham City with 50 pounds of CX-8000 explosives. Batman and Robin intervened. Batman jumped from the Batwing into the blimp. While he fought Scarface's gang, the detonator was damaged. The Ventriloquist realized it was activated but it was so damaged he couldn't turn it off. The gang jumped out first. Batman was forced to flee with the Ventriloquist. As they fell to the waters below, Scarface was dropped. He called the Ventriloquist a butterfingered jabroni. Robin deployed the net and scooped up Batman and Ventriloquist but asked why he didn't get to have any fun. After Batman returned to GCPD headquarters with the Ventriloquist, Bullock interrogated him alone. Gordon, Batman, and Robin observed from the other side of the two way glass. Renee Montoya entered the room and revealed none of Scarface's gang survived but the doll was found. Bullock took Scarface out and made Wesker take it so they could get answers. Scarface assumed Wesker was snitching on him and clocked Bullock then smacked Wesker around. Batman removed Scarface and the interrogation ended.

Batman battled Ra's al Ghul in Kathmandu. Batman and Bane came into conflict yet again. Half an hour after hitting Bane with a dart, Batman caught up to him, swung down, and decked him. Bane didn't flinch, grabbed an arm, then raised Batman over his head and promised to break him. The dart's contents finally took effect and Bane was rendered unconscious. Batman concluded he needed to quadruple the dose and retrieved the dart from Bane's back then noted it was only 10 pm after a giant robot made its presence known in the streets below. He checked on Bullock and an officer stuck in a car kicked onto its side by the robot then chased after it to WayneTech. It ripped the vault from its foundation. Batman appeared and told it to return the vault. The robot turned and shot at him, punched the ceiling, and left WayneTech. Batman fired his grapling gun and threw three exploding Batarangs at the robot. It was not damaged and threw a delivery truck at him then flew away.

Back at the Batcave, Batman was unable to detect any heat signature, generated by it, on satellite and concluded its flight capability was not by jet propulsion or any heat-generating means. He didn't think it was extra terrestrial in nature yet noted the vault it stole contained alien hardware lent by Superman for testing. Pennyworth yearned for days when the problem was the mob. He presented a merino wool and cashmere suit with a subtle blue strip for a cocktail party at Cloud Nine. Wayne wasn't interested. Pennyworth informed him Lex Luthor was a surprise guest. Veronica Vreeland cornered Wayne at the party and asked him why they ever split up and became friends on a whim. Wayne replied friends were good to have. Vreeland retorted they were good for cat sitting. Wayne reminded her he wasn't the marrying type. She teased he was a family man at heart since he just adopted another boy. He clarified Tim Drake was his ward and was with him for awhile. Vreeland mused the boys could use a mother's touch all alone in big, drafty Wayne Manor.

Lex Luthor interrupted and warned her against trying to elicit emotion from a lost cause like Wayne, citing he had experience himself. Wayne introduced them. Vreeland was charmed and recalled he was the notorious mastermind of Metropolis. Luthor advised her not to believe everything she read in the Daily Planet. He then requested a few minutes alone with Wayne and perhaps talk some sense into him. Vreeland obliged the request and invited Luthor to stop by and see her at the bar after. Wayne admitted to Luthor he was surprised to hear he was in town and he usually told him when he was. Luthor revealed he was in and out this time then admitted he wasn't particularly fond of Gotham, not since the incident with the Joker. Luthor then mused Batman wasn't to effective the night before against the robot that broke into WayneTech. Wayne chimed it could have gone better. Luthor even admitted Superman probably would have flattened it in no time. Wayne teased and asked for Superman's phone number since the two were so close.

Luthor replied it wouldn't help since Superman was missing in action since last week after a big battle on the Far Side of the Moon then asked Wayne what "they" got. Wayne was confused. Luthor was sure someone had to have programmed the robot. Wayne "wished" he could tell him more. Luthor told him to be that way and walked off. Later that night, Batman found the giant robot in a hangar at Claremon Airfield. After taking out an armed goon, he entered and hailed Alfred Pennyworth on comms to confirm he made it inside. Batman sighted the robot, now offline, and attached a miniature scanner to a leg. Pennyworth monitored the scanner's progress and inquired about the vault. Batman noted a device was about the crack the combination on the vault. He was suddenly shot in the back by a green energy blast. Lex Luthor, in a Lexcorp warsuit, was not pleased to see Batman and held him off the ground by his head.

Luthor assured him Superman wasn't coming to his rescue. Batman countered he was in over his head. Luthor stated he was about to lose his. The vault was opened and revealed an inactive head of Brainiac. Luthor proclaimed it was the future then revealed he watched Superman and Brainiac's latest fight from a lunar satellite and knew about the head. Batman told him he wouldn't find any secrets of the universe in it and there was no programming left because Brainiac uploaded himself somewhere into space before the battle ended. Luthor smacked him and claimed all he needed to find were fragments of Brainiac's programming then he could build on them. He slowly choked Batman. Estimating ten seconds of consciousness left, Batman recalled he figured out how to hotwire the head. He threw a Batarang into the Brainiac head and triggered its eye laser function. Luthor was blasted out of the hangar. Batman returned to the Batcave and was tended to by Pennyworth. He noted in vain that Batman's rib cage looked like an old picket fence.

Batman assured him he was taking protection with him. They walked upstairs to the Super Armor suit. Pennyworth inquired if it was enough to prevail over Luthor's suit. Batman assured him he just needed to get close enough to disable the suit's energy packs. Pennyworth asked about the robot and noted it even had a co-pilot chamber. Batman was curious. Pennyworth turned his attention to the scans, there was one cockpit in the front and one in the rear of the robot. Batman realized one was a battery and deduced Luthor kidnapped Superman and turned him into a solar battery to power the robot. Batman suited up and flew back to the airfield. Batman raised a guard by his leg and levitated high above the airfield. He caved and told Batman Luthor left an hour ago in a C-17 cargo plane. He swore that was all he knew. Batman asked him where the plane was headed. Batman caught up and punched the nose of the plane. Luthor flew outside and tackled Batman and blasted him. Batman realized the warsuit was at half-strength thanks to Brainiac's beam. Batman clocked Luthor.

Luthor retreated to the plane, shed the warsuit, and jumped into the robot's cockpit. Graves told him the plane was going down and exited with a parachute strapped on. The robot burst out of the plane and grabbed Batman. Luthor declared he wouldn't escape. Batman fired a taser into the robot and jolted it with a Kryptonite charge. Superman was roused from Luthor's mind control device and broke free from the robot using heat vision and his super strength. Superman grabbed Luthor and asked Batman if he minded if he took care of the rest. Batman obliged and advised him to take Graves, too, on the way. Superman returned in full costume and asked Batman how he knew he was in the robot. Batman explained he saw the schematics and realized what happened then deduced a Kryptonite charge would break his induced state. Superman declared he once again owed him. Batman requested he just get rid of Brainiac's remains, like throwing it into the Sun. Superman agreed and took off. Batman mused he really was a boy scout. Luthor hired Deathstroke to kill Batman over the debacle.

Batman, Robin, and Batgirl responded to Clayface's rampage at a downtown theater. Batman threw a Batarang then dodged a counterattack. They surrounded Clayface but before they could close in, he split in half and bolted in opposite directions. Batgirl and Robin pursued one while Batman went after the other. Deathstroke came to their aid and leaped down and sliced Clayface's head in half with a sword coated with a fast-acting sedative. Deathstroke promised Clayface would wake up in six hours with nothing more than a bad headache. He helped Robin up to his feet. Batgirl thanked him. Batman arrived with the other half of Clayface frozen and over his shoulder. He already deduced he was Deathstroke based on a code name associated with a mercenary matching his description. Deathstroke quipped he would be the first to advocate using a fear-inducing title then stated tonight, he could call him "friend" then bid them farewell. A Farmer Brown van drove by as Deathstroke was saying his goodbyes to Batman. Deathstroke flipped towards the van. Robin commented "awesome." Batman and Batgirl stared at him.

As a favor, Gordon pulled Interpol's records on Deathstroke after he appeared in the city. He went over the files with Batman in his office and remarked there wasn't much but if half of them were true, he was one of the deadliest men to ever carry a weapon. Before asking Batman what his interest in Deathstroke was, Gordon already deduced he was gone. He remarked that some nights it didn't pay to even look. Deathstroke later approached Batgirl and commended her and Robin, a testament to Batman's training, and without them the city would have rotted a long time ago. Batgirl sensed she was listening to a sales pitch. Deathstroke insisted he just meant there was a bigger theater for a woman of her talents and she could go far under his supervision. Batgirl stated she was doing just fine. Deathstroke questioned that and asked her if she was aware someone was watching her. Red Hood was surprised and bolted from his rooftop position.

That morning, Barbara Gordon briefed Bruce Wayne, Tim Drake, and Alfred Pennyworth about the encounter. Drake was excited to hear Deathstroke thought he was good. Wayne cautioned him not to put much stock in his compliments. Drake was bummed. Wayne continued men of Deathstroke's ilk were only visible only when they needed to be. Pennyworth added and only solicitous when they wanted something. Gordon stated she definitely felt like he was after someone then moved onto the mystery man. Wayne asked she saw anything that could identify him. She admitted she only saw a shadow. Wayne was confident he would eventually tip his hand if he was really after them then advised them to keep their distance from Deathstroke until he learned more. Batman and Robin got a hot tip on the whereabouts of the Wonderland Gang. However, Batman ordered Robin back home since it was school night. Batman went alone to confront Mad Hatter and the Wonderland Gang. Red Hood observed from afar. Hatter ordered them to get Batman.

Batman kicked Carpenter then backhanded Walrus' face with a crowbar. Batman could imagine Robin using a "Tusk-tusk" pun and figured he would have enjoyed the fight. Batman threw an electric Batarang at March Hare and electrocuted her. Tweedledum and Tweedledee rushed Batman in unison. Batman simply knocked their heads into each other. Mad Hatter attempted to gut Batman with a fork lift but he jumped atop the roof, quoting Red Queen from Alice in Wonderland. Hatter drove through the wall and plummeted outside. Batman noticed the tiniest flicker of light from a old storage building nearby. He ran up the flight of stairs, jumped through a glass window, and fired his grapnel gun. He was 33 seconds too late. He searched the roof. The access door was dusty and untouched. Batman wondered what he was dealing with. Police surrounded Hatter down below. Batman was not pleased Robin cut off his comm line. From the Batcave, Pennyworth reminded him that Robin was at the age when defiance could be confused with independence. Batman asked him where he lost contact. Pennyworth recalled it was on Morrison heading for K Street. He asked if that helped any. Batman saw smoke. He jumped atop a fire truck responding to the Gotham Natural History Museum.

Batman swung in and kicked Firefly, unaware it was just Deathstroke's partner Sunny, from behind. Deathstroke observed and realized the steam created from the water would inhibit Firefly's vision and combined with Batman using infrared filters on his cowl, he had the upper hand. Batman decked Firefly enough to break the right eye glass. Firefly vowed Batman would burn next time then blew open an exit. Robin, Batman, and Deathstroke ran out into the street but Firefly was gone. Robin wanted to continue but Batman ordered him to go home immediately. Deathstroke mused he should have stopped Robin from joining him. He removed his mask then told Batman Robin and Batgirl were trained well. Batman noted Deathstroke took a lot of interest in his proteges and didn't like it. Deathstroke retorted they were more approachable. Batman asked him why he was in Gotham. Deathstroke stuck to his story that he was after Firefly but danced around who his client was, listing off agencies like the FBI, NSA, and MI:6. He even added Firefly's life was saved by Kobra because they wanted him to create a 9/11 level event in Gotham.

Batman stated he did not condone assassinations and wanted him to let him know once Firefly was located. Deathstroke agreed to keep him informed but realized Batman was already gone. Jason Todd observed from a nearby roof. Pennyworth and Wayne examined satellite footage of their stalker. Barbara Gordon joined them. Wayne noted they lost him in the shadows. Gordon was surprised he jumped to escape detection since the next building was half a block away. Pennyworth speculated he could fly. Wayne looked at him. Pennyworth quipped they did that in Metropolis. Wayne pointed out the stalker was using an extra thin cable but to pull off the feat, he had to be an athlete of extraordinary strength. Just after dusk, Pennyworth served dinner to Tim Drake and Bruce Wayne. Drake tried to get out of his punishment by mentioning the Bond movie had been out for awhile. Before he could finish his sentence, Wayne told him no. Drake pointed out his sentence was for Robin and he just passed his Geometry final. Wayne still said no. Pennyworth commended him for giving it a try. He looked up and couldn't believe the Batsignal was being projected already.

Batman went alone to the roof of the Gotham City Police Department and found all of the police present and Commissioner Gordon lying motionless. He checked Gordon's pulse. Deathstroke revealed himself and claimed they were all just subjected to knockout gas. He noticed Batman didn't bring anyone with him and noted it would be less complicated. Batman asked where Lynns was. Deathstroke affixed a grapple hook and rappelled down to his motorcycle. He teased Batman he would have to follow him to find out and reiterated Firefly was his, dead or alive. Deathstroke and Batman arrived at the Tri-State Dam and found an explosive charge. Deathstroke fed him the cover story that Firefly planned to take down the entire eastern seaboard. He readied his sai to disable the bomb while Batman went inside. Batman was already skeptical they were facing the real Firefly because he already noticed his movies were different and erratic, his voice lacked Lynns' moody, psychotic edge and he was wearing three inch lifts in his boots when he should be taller than him.

Firefly appeared and fired at Batman. Batman jumped off the walkway, turned, and threw a freeze capsule at him. Firefly plummeted and knocked out on the floor. Batman removed the mask and confirmed his suspicions. He has no idea who Sunny was but estimated she couldn't be over 20. Deathstroke converged on him with his Hephaestus Sword activated. Batman dodged his stroke and observed energy discharged from it cracked the floor. Batman tried to swing back up onto the walkway but Deathstroke sliced and the energy cut him across his back and severed his cape. Deathstroke then cut a column and collapsed the walkway. Deathstroke revealed he wasn't just trying to kill him, he was conspiring to take over Batman's operation. He noted Robin liked him but Batgirl was hesitant. He spilled the rest of his plan: to burn Batman's body to a crisp, frame Firefly for it, then motivated by his failure to save Batman – he would hunt down Firefly and kill him as he recovered with Kobra, and Batman's proteges would be so grateful then they would be under his wing in no time.

Batgirl and Robin heard everything and threw out rope around Deathstroke's arms then yanked him backwards. Robin remarked he thought Joker was a motor mouth. Deathstroke sliced the ropes and lamented the development but proceeded to kill them, too. Batman reached for the packs on the Firefly costume and threw a jar at Deathstroke. He sliced it and accelerant spilled all over him. He lit on fire. Deathstroke pointed out his suit was kevlar and he was only succeeded in making him look more menacing. Batman pointed out his suit would also heat up and guessed it was already 10 degrees higher. Deathstroke swung into a vat and triggered an explosion. He tried to escape and strip off his suit but Batman threw a fire extinguisher at his head and knocked him out. He then sprayed the extinguisher on him to put out the flames. Pennyworth tended to Batman in the Batcave while Batgirl ran an analysis on the note in the book. Robin inquired if he was no longer grounded. Batman asked about the fingerprints.

Batgirl reported, other than hers, the paper was clean. Pennyworth asked how she figured out the Tri-State Dam was the target. Batgirl noted she put two and two together. Robin added "they" did. Batgirl pointed out this all meant their stalker knew her secret identity. Batman finished her sentence and confirmed that meant he knew everything, even what their opponents were doing. Batman wondered what he wanted and why he was playing a cat-and-mouse game with them. Batman chased Catwoman roof to roof after she stole a crown. Batman contemplated if Tim Drake was right and he took his time chasing Catwoman. She taunted Batman and threw her bag up in the air. Batman threw out a line with a Batarang affixed and snagged the crown. She blew him a kiss but before she could escape, Azrael captured her with a bola and swung away with her. Batman briefly considered he was the mystery stalker from the last few weeks but concluded he was a new player. Batman fired his grapnel line and followed. Azrael activated his Sword of Sin and cut a water tower stand.

Batman disengaged his line from the falling tower and quickly fired it off again. In an alley, Azrael tossed Catwoman into a trash can and demanded the Shawl of Magdalene. She couldn't believe he wanted that "rag." He became agitated and pointed his sword at her head then promised he never kids. He mused the loss of eye would get his point across. Batman threw a Batarang and knocked the Sword of Sin out of Azrael's hand. Batman declared nobody was losing anything, except him and his patience. Azrael quickly leaped forward and socked Batman. Jason Todd observed from the roof up above and remarked Azrael was like a panther. Batman recognized his fighting moves and realized he was Jean-Paul from the Order of St. Dumas. Batman threw out gas balls and his hunch was right. Azrael's mask lacked filters. Azrael grabbed his sword and fled the scene, plowing through a wood fence before his reflexes slowed down further. Catwoman extricated herself from the bola. Batman ordered her to tell him about the Shawl. She admitted she stole it from some monastery.

Batman told her the Shawl of Magdalene was sacred to the St. Dumas priests and it was supposed to have healing properties. Catwoman teased she should put it over his heart. Batman grabbed her wrist and told her to get serious, a vengeful God ruled over the Order and they would have no mercy on her. She revealed she was hired to steal it and no longer had the Shawl. Batman warned her to tell him who hired her and offered protection. She complied and was taken into custody by the Gotham City Police Department. Commissioner Gordon was concerned Batman requested a 24 hour guard for her. He stated trouble was already here. Batman was hailed by Pennyworth on comms. Alfred Pennyworth informed him he had a visitor at Wayne Manor who requested his presence. Azrael held his flaming sword to Pennyworth's neck. Batman and Azrael retired to the Batcave. Azrael revealed he always suspected he was Bruce Wayne and it was confirmed when they fought earlier that night. He also revealed he always admitted Wayne's defensive skills.

Batman inquired about the costume. Azrael mused "when in Rome" and took off his mask. Jean-Paul explained he chose to wear something imposing while he tracked down Catwoman. Batman thought it was a bit too imposing. He revealed the priests gave him the name "Azrael" and wondered what they would have named Wayne had he stayed. Azrael admitted he wasn't surprised when Wayne left because he always knew he was only interested in learning fighting disciplines and not the Church. Batman teased he was always a late sleeper. Azrael guessed he didn't believe in the Shawl's power either. Batman left it at he would choose a physical over a piece of cloth. Jean-Paul stated Catwoman was going to suffer for stealing it. Batman informed him she was hired to steal it and she told him who the client was. Jean-Paul asked who it was. Batman laid down some ground rules: he had to drop his pursuit of Catwoman and he would be willing to help recover the Shawl. He even offered to make a new armor with Pennyworth that would make him look more ally than enemy. Jean-Paul stated he could be reasonable.

Batman and Azrael went to the Iceberg Lounge to question the Penguin about the Shawl of Magdalene. Penguin lauded them for being civilized and not delivering so much as a concussion to his staff. He offered them a little Arsenic. Batman cut to the point and demanded the Shawl. Penguin revealed he was just the middleman in the transaction and passed it on to the new and anonymous owner. Azrael knocked Penguin's drink and hat off and demanded a name. Penguin called out to Mr. Wing. A giant white humanoid bird entered the office and grabbed Batman. Penguin introduced him as his new wingman and the last name either of them would hear. Mr. Wing couldn't believe he got to ice Batman and some other loser on his first week of work. He told Penguin he had a bonus coming. Penguin ordered him to just finish them off. Batman gave the code "Sword of Salvation" and in unison, he and Azrael kicked Mr. Wing in the gut. He dropped them. Batman teased Azrael he had to skip evening prayers now and then to learn that move. Azrael chased after Penguin to the balcony.

Wing lunged at Batman but he warned the goon Penguin was notoriously cheap and didn't reward failure. Batman tossed Wing on to the bar then mused he might kick in for his medical bills. Batman ran to the balcony and saw Azrael already beat Penguin to a pulp to get the name of his client. He deemed Penguin would be Catwoman's substitute and take on her suffering. Penguin was tossed off. Batman snagged one his legs with a rope and pulled him up. Azrael left in the meantime. From a gargoyle nearby, Jason Todd watched the incident and couldn't believe Batman let someone else pull the vanishing act on him. He wanted Batman to pull his head out of his cape so he could see what's coming. While he drove around the city in the Batmobile, Batman spoke with Pennyworth over comms. Batman informed him Penguin was still resting in intensive care and wasn't going to be repeating who his client was. Pennyworth informed him the Batcomputer picked up an alert transmitted over the GCPD frequency. It was about a grave robbery of the body of Nora Fries.

Batman started his search at Iceland because Mr. Freeze used to use the ice rink to store his equipment. Batman was wary of Freeze because of his desperation to revive Fries. He found Azrael frozen solid. Mr. Freeze estimated Azrael had about 60 seconds left. Batman resorted to jilt Freeze out of his insanity by kicking the table Fries' corpse was resting on. Freeze was shocked and held her wrapped in the Shawl. Batman threw two Batarangs. One landed on Azrael. Batman pleaded with him to let him help. Freeze refused. The second Batarang pierced the back of Freeze's helmet and the sonic pulse it emitted shattered it. Batman grabbed the Freeze Gun and blasted his head. He guessed the ice would keep him breathing long enough for the police to arrive. The other Batarang shattered the ice around Azrael's head. Freeze fell on his back grasping at his collar. Batman could barely find a pulse on Azrael. He grabbed the Shawl and placed it on Azrael. It worked and he was saved.

Bruce Wayne and Jean-Paul went to the Church of St. Dumas. Wayne lit a candle to honor Fries and pray for Mr. Freeze's recovery. Jean-Paul was surprised by his compassion and mused one might almost call it saintly. Wayne retorted he wouldn't. Jean-Paul placed the Shawl back into its case and stated he owed his life to Wayne and the Shawl. Wayne speculated his resilience played a larger part in his survival but implored him to believe it if it was a comfort. Jean-Paul promised he would not be so impulsive next time. Wayne inquired what he meant. Jean-Paul clarified if he ever needed his help. Wayne told him he would let him know and thanked him. Not long after a skirmish on Amusement Mile, police and Batman went over the grounds. Commissioner Gordon informed Batman that Joker was seen on Jean Street, heading for the turnpike. Batman picked up a rod and lifted up a handgun. He deduced Joker had a visitor and it wasn't a friendly call.

Batman examined the gun over and over in the Batcave. He kept getting the same result, the prints on the bullets belonged to Jason Todd. Alfred Pennyworth noticed dinner was getting cold and brought it down to the Batcave. When Batman shared the revelation, Pennyworth couldn't believe it. Batman was certain Jason Todd was the mystery stalker. Pennyworth reminded him Todd was dead and he saw it himself. Tim Drake overheard and demanded to know what was going on. Batman stated he needed to get out to the city and told Pennyworth to tell Drake everything about Jason Todd. Batman drove to The Den, now long abandoned and boarded up, and found Jason Todd inside at the bar. He teased the "world's greatest detective" took longer to find him than he thought. He mused the bar had more sentimental value than Wayne Manor because it was the first place they met. Batman asked him what happened to him. He replied there wasn't much point to write to him after he was gave him up for dead after that night at the Joker's. Batman stated he searched everywhere for him.

Jason Todd admitted the one useful skill he learned was how to pull a vanishing act and he spent a few years to find himself while he recuperated. Todd revealed his new moniker to Batman, the Red Hood. He mused he would get the Joker soon enough and would take his time with everyone else on his list. Batman apologized about what happened and promised he would do anything to make it right. Batman quoted him, asking for a chance. Red Hood told him Bruce Wayne believed so much in the people he cared about that he blinded himself to the obvious. In his case, he was flawed from the start. Hood continued and told him he fooled himself into believing he could reach him despite Batman's steel-trap mind. Red Hood declared he was still playing the fool and pointed out the abandoned bar was full of whiskey bottles filled with gasoline. He got out his gun and opened fire, triggering an explosion. Batman leaped out and watched as Red Hood climbed up an escape ladder waving goodbye. Batman realized he wanted revenge, he was going to taunt and wear them down then finish them off when they least expected it unless he killed him first.

Batman feared for Leslie Thompkins and went to her Mercy Gotham Clinic in Crime Alley. Thompkins commended a little girl named Keri for coming to her quick to treat a bad cut. She prepared a tetanus shot. Keri stated she wasn't scared but was startled by Batman appearing behind Thompkins. Thompkins noted she hadn't started yet. Keri pointed to Batman. Thompkins assured her he wouldn't hurt her. Keri already knew he wouldn't hurt a child. Thompkins gave her a shot and told her to get home. Batman advised her to watch where she was going so she wouldn't get into anymore accidents. Keri thanked him and hurried home, excited she now knew Batman. Thompkins was amused by his advice and reiterated the clinic wasn't his personal emergency room. Batman cut her off and informed her Jason Todd was alive. Thompkins couldn't believe it. Batman assured her he was alive but angrier than ever. He figured he would come to see her since he always liked her. He warned her that Todd had been stalking them.

Thompkins yelled at him and admonished him for letting Todd run wild as Robin. Batman countered he was going to end it but he bolted. Thompkins didn't accept that and told him Todd was his responsibility, hers, Alfred's and he made them all culpable in what happened. She teared up and turned her back on him. She apologized and told him to leave. Just as Batman was about to step out the door. Thompkins apologized for lashing out. She understood he was hurt more than anyone, but she believed there might be a bigger cost to what happened. Batman and Batgirl returned to the Batcave to find Pennyworth injured and Drake missing. Thompkins later called Batman, asking about Pennyworth. Batman assured her that he was fine. Thompkins emphasized her feelings had not changed but she asked him to do what he had to do because something was wrong. She asked him to save Todd then hung up. Pennyworth wondered why Todd wanted Drake. Batman deduced he was being used for the endgame.

Batman brought up a map of Gotham on the Batcomputer with every spot satellites sighted Red Hood. Batman abruptly ran to the Batmobile. Pennyworth deduced he knew Red Hood was starting to make his play and he needed to be out there. After a skirmish between henchmen at the Iceberg Lounge, Red Hood tranquilized and collected Joker and told Penguin to tell Batman he came. Some time later, police arrived. Penguin remarked Batman had an uncanny knack for showing up when he either was not wanted or no longer needed. Batman inquired about Straightman while Batgirl looked around with her flashlight. Penguin was irate about his three million dollar chandelier and vowed to hang Red Hood in its place. Batman noted Red Hood didn't say where he was taking the Joker. Penguin was annoyed and answered he wasn't looking to prolong the visit. Batgirl noticed wet streaks and alerted Batman. She recalled the last time it rained in the city was last week. Penguin recalled he got a clammy smell off Red Hood but dismissed it as bad hygiene.

Batman realized Red Hood was using the sewer system to hide the whole time and had taken over Killer Croc's old lair. They went out the back door of the lounge. He noticed Batgirl was unconscious on the Batcycle and found a dart in her back. From a storm drain, Red Hood claimed by tomorrow morning, she would be back to being as obnoxious as ever. He teased if he expected to see a clown then promised he had one in the sewers, too, then darted Batman with his last shot. Some time later, Batman regained consciousness and awoke to the Joker. Joker feigned relief and yelled at him to get him out. Batman realized he was in the sewer lair. Joker was chained to a pipe and Robin was up to his knees in water in a glass tank filling up. Robin informed them they weren't leaving anytime soon then assured Batman is was okay for the moment. Red Hood added that all depended on Batman. Batman pointed out they were all in danger because the old pipes in the lair could blow any second.

Red Hood was sure everything would hold together enough for them to finish their business. Batman already figured out a way for Robin to escape and told Red Hood he underestimated Robin because he was used to pressure and has been around the block. Robin examined his choice of words and realized what he meant then took his cape off. Hood told Batman he was patient and was a believer in second chances, pointing out he was the second Robin, was better than the first, and was willing to go above and beyond to wipe out scum like the Joker. Joker picked the locks and freed himself then realized he was the former Robin. Red Hood revealed his escaped certain death by grabbing onto a parade balloon. Joker thought the story was fantastic, surprising Hood. Joker was lying, of course, and excused himself. Red Hood shot his left arm and explained Batman had one chance to fix things: kill the Joker with a crowbar. Batman stated he knew he would not. Hood declared he would watch the third Robin die instead.

Batman continued with his mind games and asserted Robin would escape. Hood pointed out the tank was escape-proof. Batman quipped it was for a weak, immature Robin. Joker was shocked. Batman told him to be quiet. Hood didn't believe him and threw a gun to Joker to make it easier. Joker found the self-defense idea zero fun and tossed the gun aside. Hood shot at his shoes and demanded he pick the gun up. Joker told him to wake up because he ran out of threats. He mused Batman would just get another Robin at a bargain rate. Joker goaded Hood to shoot him because Batman would haul him to the police and his unmasking would complicate things even further. Joker called it his final victory and went right up to Hood's gun. He was interrupted by beeping. Straightman homed in on Joker and burst through the floor of the sewer lair Red Hood was using. Joker remembered the homing device in Straightman's skull. Straightman grabbed Red Hood by the face and slammed him down on the ground.

Joker applauded his perfect timing and picked up a hand gun, intending to kill the Robin of the past and present. He noticed Robin was gone and got hit in the back of the head with a crowbar. Robin tossed it to Batman but it hardly hurt Straightman. Straightman smacked Batman and voiced disappointment after all the hype. Batman dodged his punch. Straightman decided to deliver the pay off rather than Joker and punched again. Batman dodged and the unstable wall gave way. Straightman was knocked out by huge debris and was carried off by the current with Joker and Red Hood. Joker screamed he told him never to ad-lib. Red Hood's jacket hung from the crowbar after it wedged into a wall. Robin climbed the stairs halfway to a manhole cover and fired his grapnel line to Batman. The lair was collapsing. Batman told Hood to hold on. Hood removed his mask and realized Batman never gave up on him. Batman vowed he never would and implored him to come back with them. Hood pointed out he wouldn't live up to his code because he couldn't change who he was. He pointed out he tried once and this is what happened.

Robin told Batman to hurry. Red Hood told Batman he was off the hook and he should go save the Robin who needed him. Hood pulled himself off the crowbar and was carried off by the current. The sealed manhole cover suddenly exploded. Batgirl lowered herself down and asked what she missed. A search was conducted in the harbor. Batgirl's two drones failed to locate any of them. Batman admitted he made a terrible mistake with Jason Todd and wondered about Batgirl and Robin. Robin pointed out Todd at least knew he would never abandon him. Batgirl added Jason Todd made his choice, like they did. Robin stated they weren't going anywhere. During the Christmas season, Robin and Batman observed Arnold Wesker, freshly discharged, from a rooftop near Gotham Plaza. Robin concluded he seemed okay. Batman still wanted to keep an eye on him since the holidays put undue stress on people who lived isolated lives and with Wesker still emotionally vulnerable, it would be a disastrous time for him to slip and for Scarface to reappear.

On Christmas Eve, Dr. Leland went over security footage with Batman and Robin at Arkham after Straightman broke in. She founds his origins as a government super soldier experiment subservient to the Joker horrible. Batman agreed but was concerned why he broke in. Robin speculated it was for one of Joker's toys. Leland revealed he only took the Scarface doll. They staked out Wesker's apartment. Robin operated a drone but found no sign of Joker or Scarface, just Wesker drinking hot cocoa and wrapping a present. Batman couldn't believe it and realized he even looked happy. Robin quipped even crooks felt that way during the holidays. He sent the drone in after Wesker left and saw an invite to Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy's Christmas party at the Iceberg Lounge. He deduced Batman wasn't going to like it. He was correct. They perched on a roof near the Lounge. Robin reckoned Commissioner Gordon was gonna love his Christmas present, all the creeps in one place, practically gift wrapped. Batman wanted to hold off and infiltrate the party as Knute Brody, Gotham's most inept henchman, in order to stop Joker's plans.

As Batman suspected, Joker showed up. Knute Brody claimed he was supposed to be at the Gotham Orphanage but went to the wrong address. Joker had him give out his gift. Knute naturally misread the tag and called out Roxy Rocket. Straightman shoved her aside. Joker tried to give his out himself but Knute agreed to help speed things up and threw out all the presents. Joker was knocked over in the chaos. On the sly, Batman told Robin to call in the "diversion." Robin called up Commissioner Gordon and tipped him off about the party. Knute told everyone it's better to open the presents than wait because he saw the police pulling up ten minutes ago. Ivy and Harley ended the party and everyone cleared out. Knute escorted Arnold Wesker out Penguin's secret exit. Wesker was grateful for his help. Knute found a present with his name on it. After wishing each other happy holidays, they parted ways. Knute was clubbed on the head from behind by Straightman. Straightman then asked what to do with him. Joker "consulted" Scarface then ordered him to crush Knute's larynx and break both legs. Luckily, the police arrived. Joker and Straightmen fled the scene.

Batman and Robin stormed Wesker's apartment but they were too late. Robin saw Wesker's present but couldn't believe Batman bought him socks. Batman assured him he was pressed for time. Batman found a Joker card on Wesker's Christmas tree. He mused it was going to get worse before it got better. On New Year's Eve, at 6:36 pm, Batman and Robin met with Commissioner Gordon on the GCPD roof. They learned none of the leads on the Joker panned out. Luckily, Pennyworth was able to identify Eileen Kwan from Batman's sketch and he accessed her customer records and located Ivy's hideout. At 9 pm, Harley returned to the hideout with the food and drinks they needed to celebrate with. She found Ivy tied up and Batman and Robin waiting. Ivy declared the party was stupid. Batman demanded the Joker's location but Harley insisted they were still broken up and she wanted nothing to do with him. Robin persisted she had to know something. Harley declared he could sink in quicksand, fall in a tar pit, or rot in his Ha-Ha Hideaway. She stopped herself but Ivy quipped that was fast even for her.

Batman and Robin stormed the Hideaway but it was already cleared out. Batman found an old subway ticket from the 55th Street Subway Station near Wesker's apartment and deduced he left them a clue without Scarface or Joker realizing it. After Joker set the explosives and betrayed and gassed Scarface and Wesker, he was ready to leave but Straightman pointed out Batman and Robin arrived. Robin went to save Wesker from being run over by the holiday express lane while Batman disabled Joker's rail car with a Batarang and tussled with Straightman. Batman timed it and Straightman was plowed by the express line then it smashed up Joker's rail car. Scarface was run over and reduced to pieces as well. The bomb was disabled and Gordon was notified the threat was over. Joker was later arrested. Wesker blamed himself but Robin pointed out his clue helped them and Batman made him realize he defied Scarface for the first time and was something of a hero for saving everyone's lives at Gotham Center. They walked up to the surface. Wesker was amazed at all the people. Robin declared it was a new year. Batman added it was a new beginning. Wesker agreed.

After the assassination of Mayor Hill in his penthouse, Maureen Hill, his wife, gave her statement to Commissioner Gordon. Hamilton Hill Junior, their oldest son, eventually cut him off, aghast because of the state she was in, and exclaimed the police and their "strongman" were supposed to be stopping these maniacs. Junior led Maureen away and stated his father gave his life to the city and didn't deserve a bloody tabloid death. Gordon noticed Batman was studying a wall and inquired what he was looking at. Batman noted they were claw marks and wanted to take an impression. To his surprise, Batman turned around and felt as if someone was watching them from the next roof. Hill's killer, a Talon, was and he took off. Batman took the impression and compared them to claws in General Vreeland's Court of Owls collection at Vreeland Manor. Veronica Vreeland happened to pass by while she was leaving a voice mail for Bruce Wayne. Batman confirmed the claws were a match. General Vreeland entered with his gun drawn. She got him to stand down by reminding him of the time Batman saved them.

The general was surprised Batman believed in the Court like him since no one else did. Batman noted there was some truth to any legend. General Vreeland relayed what he knew about the secret society, including an encounter his own father had with a Talon in the 1950's. He remembered he had a manual on Talons written in code until it was stolen during one of his daughter's degenerate parties. Batman managed to leave without either noticing. Luckily, Deadman had been tailing Batman and noticed a Talon waiting outside in the brush. Bruce Wayne returned Vreeland's call and overheard a fight. Batman returned and threw several Batarangs into the arm and side of Talon. Batman ordered Vreeland to get to safety, unaware she was possessed by Deadman. The Talon reveled in meeting Batman. Batman teased it was all Talon's pleasure. Talon taunted Batman that he was never worth the bother to eliminate until now for crossing him. Batman hit him with a chair then fired a bola at him. Talon quickly broke free.

Deadman tried again to possess him but Talon told him to stay away and struck his chest. Batman was confused. Talon promised their fight would continue at a later time when the odds favored the Owls. To cover his escape, Talon knocked an unconscious Vreeland into the swimming pool. Batman pulled Vreeland to the surface. She ran back in the house to find her father. Batman tapped his comm and told Commissioner Gordon to send an ambulance. Nightwing took first watch over General Vreeland's hospital room and reported in hours later that nothing happened but the general was stable. Batman appreciated it and informed him Robin was on the way to relieve him. He wondered if the one who killed Hill and the one who attacked the general was the same person. Batman was positive. Nightwing wanted to know why they never heard of the Court of Owls when Batman knew Gotham's history inside and out. Batman thought he did and looked through General Vreeland's Court of Owls collection in the Batcave. Batman looked at an Owl mask.

Deadman possessed Batman to write him a note, "He's a Zombie" then left. Nightwing thought he simply cut out for a minute. Bruce Wayne paid Zatanna a visit in Las Vegas after one of her magic acts to discuss a ghost trying to help Batman solve the murder of Mayor Hill. Boston Brand came to her mind and she remembered his high wire acts were gruesome and nothing more thrilled him than the cries of horror from a spellbound crowd. He noted Batman and Nightwing caught his killer. He inquired about a way to communicate with Brand. Zatanna produced an amulet from her hat and told him it would give him the power to see and hear him. Wayne asked what the catch was since it was magic. Zatanna teased it only required him to believe. Back in Gotham, Batman put the amulet around his head and sat in a meditative pose on a statue for one hour and ten minutes. He found it ridiculous and was about to leave but Deadman finally appeared and spoke to him. Batman realized he was there the whole time. Deadman assured him it was to make sure he was a believer and he looked kind of cute sitting like that.

While Batman analyzed the Talon gauntlet, Deadman possessed Alfred Pennyworth so he could converse with Nightwing. Deadman went the extra mile and did a one handed hand stand then performed several flips in a row. Batman had enough and ordered Deadman to vacate Pennyworth's body. Deadman decided to go along with Bruce Wayne to Mayor Hill's funeral to case the crowd for intel. Deadman possessed Hamilton Hill's sister to report some gossip going about tension between Maureen Hill and Hamilton Hill Junior. Wayne pointed out his host was not a good choice being Hill's sister. Deadman agreed, he thought her shoes were killing him. Wayne directed him to the three observers watching the funeral from afar. Deadman left her body and pursued the trio to a church. The Owl was shocked there really was a ghost. Three zombie Talons got the drop on Deadman and proceeded to get rid of him. Deadman was in great pain and realized he was dissipating. Luckily, Batman intervened with a exploding Batarang while Deadman pulled himself together. He was not impressed when Batman found a Talon finger in the rubble.

While it was analyzed in the Batcave, Deadman mused he wasn't so different than the zombies. Batman mentioned it was up to him to decide to move on. Deadman admitted he feared doing so and wanted to do enough good that would guarantee him getting into Heaven first before he moved on. Batman could relate. Deadman perked up over their bonding. Batman learned the Talons were susceptible to cold. Deadman looked at the Mr. Freeze display and mused he could have been some help. Batman shifted to figuring out where the Talon's lair was and recalled the Court legend. Deadman joked they must have had so much fun hanging out at City Hall. Batman realized that was the location, to Deadman's surprise. Batman and Deadman sneaked onto a giant owl statue from an entrance in the ceiling and learned the culprit was Hamilton Hill all along and he wanted to rebuild the Court and rule Gotham. Batman declared only Hill's insane dream would die that night.

Suddenly, an army of zombie Talons entered the room. Deadman was at a loss. Batman told him to pick a weapon and start smashing. Deadman understood, possessed Junior and fought the zombies. Batman produced the Freeze Gun and started freezing several zombies. The Talon swooped over, grabbed Batman's arm, tossed him, and destroyed the Freeze Gun. It overloaded and froze his upper body. Hill refused to surrender. He chose to die and set off the charges in the hall. Batman fired his grappling gun and fled with the Deadman-possessed Junior. From a roof above the site, Deadman noted to Batman that Junior only told the police Batman saved him from his father's killer. Batman pointed out he still wanted to be mayor and wouldn't tarnish the family reputation with the truth. Deadman retorted he didn't seem to have a high opinion of people for a guy who saved them. Batman admitted his opinion of Deadman improved after all the good he did on the case and he would be one step closer to Heaven. Deadman decided to stick around on Earth a little longer and was still looking forward to bonding over Bat-beer. Batman quipped that wasn't happening in his lifetime. Deadman joked he could wait. They parted ways.

Batman suddenly went solo one night. Batman disarmed a henchman as Black Mask pulled his hand gun. He thought Batman had some nerve breaking into his hideout. Batman just wanted Jazzman's location. Black Mask wanted to know that as well because he was being extorted and pointed out if he knew that, he wouldn't be present. Batman disarmed him and pinned a gatling gun under his neck. A second henchman approached. Batgirl disarmed him with a Batarang. Batman wasn't pleased with her presence and insisted he had things handled. Batgirl didn't think so. Batman pointed out there was a third hiding behind a door and he shouldn't be a problem. Black Mask believed he was actually the most dangerous man on his team, his lawyer Stanley Shangles. At his behest, Shangles stepped out and greeted Batman. Black Mask threatened to sue Batman for the skirmish. Shangles advised against such choices in the heat of the moment but backed up his claim he had no idea where Jazzman was then added Jazzman contacted them, not the other way around.

Batgirl became livid Batman was keeping her away from a case involving Jazzman, the gangster who shot her father years ago. She stated she read all his files and knew him backwards and forwards. Batman told her she was too close to it and seeing him face-to-face was different. Batman was also interested in whatever information Jazzman had that could take down Black Mask once and for all. He ended the conversation abruptly and left in the Batmobile. Later that night, he followed her Batcycle's distress signal to the Gotham Stockyards and arrived after Batgirl neutralized Jazzman. They hauled Jazzman to GCPD where Detective Bullock and Montoya interrogated him. Bullock refused to let him walk for the files on Black Mask. Batman noticed he was trying to cover up the tattoo on his neck and slammed his head on the table. They discovered a microdot embedded on his neck and realized he was carrying the files in plain sight the whole time. Bullock ordered an officer to escort Jazzman to a cell while he awaited transfer back to Stonegate Penitentiary.

Batman observed a police raid led by Detective Montoya at the old Gotham Steel Yard. He thought if all police officers were like her, he wouldn't have much to do but noted she wasn't a fan of his. He mused if he was lucky, he would be sitting the raid out. He entered the building and knocked two of Rupert Thorne's lietenants down the stairs as they ran for the back door. Montoya holstered her gun and thanked Batman but pointed out she had all the exits blocked. Batman quipped he thought he'd help. She asked him if he read them their rights. She remembered that was her job and he was just around to work out his aggression issues. He was sorry she felt that way. She asserted he was good for dealing with the freaks and psycho clowns but real-world criminals needed to be handled by real-world cops because it didn't end in an arrest, there was the courts, depositions, and testimony. The Muscle placed Montoya in his sights. Luckily, Bullock spotted him first, fired a shot off, and yelled there was a shooter.

Batman threw out an exploding Batarang and the blast knocked Muscle off his feet. Batman arrived first. The Muscle regretted not taking him out first. Batman quipped that wasn't going to be his only regret. Muscle caught him offguard and quickly clocked him. Batman was surprised he was faster and a lot stronger than he tought. The Muscle ripped a fan unit off the roof and threw it at Batman. Montoya arrived and ordered him to put his hands up. He punched a water tower and leaped off the roof. She reiterated she had police blockades set up around the Steel Yard. Batman wasn't so optimistic. Montoya received a police commendation from Hamilton Hill, Junior at a ceremony. In her acceptance speech, Montoya stated she felt truly humbled but in way undeserving because fighting crime was hardly a one-person show, despite what a "caped fellow" seemed to think. Alfred Pennyworth pointed out he got zinged. He noted it. As a precaution, Bruce Wayne offered Montoya and her girlfriend Gloria Navarro a ride home in the likelihood the Muscle would make another move.

During the drive, Wayne complimented Montoya on naming everyone on her team. Montoya believed she couldn't have pulled off the raid without them and they deserved the spotlight. Navarro still thought she could have been a little nicer to "you-know-who," alluding to Batman. Montoya gave her a stare. She knew he was a loose cannon but she admitted it was comforting to think he was somewhere watching over Montoya when she was out on the streets. The Muscle made his move and side swiped Wayne's limousine. Wayne got between him and Montoya, took a bullet and blacked out. Montoya returned fire and more police arrived, forcing Muscle to retreat. Hours later, Wayne awoke in a room in the Gotham Hospital. He called out to Alfred Pennyworth but recoiled in pain. Pennyworth eased him back into his bed and explained he suffered a severe concussion and bullet wound in his shoulder. Wayne asked how he was. Pennyworth cited just a bump on his head. Montoya thanked him and noted not every hero in Gotham wore a mask. Wayne downplayed it and asked what happened. Montoya explained there were rumors of a fixer for hire on the level of Batman who made problems disappear if his price was met then she and Pennyworth filled in what he missed after he blacked out.

Montoya got a call. She thought it was Navarro but it was the Muscle. She checked a text. It was a photo of Navarro tied up. He told her to follow his instructions if she wanted to see her alive again. Montoya simply told Wayne something came up and left. Wayne watched Montoya from his window and deduced Muscle got to her. He got dressed. Pennyworth stressed his doctor said he needed rest. Wayne asked him how he got to the hospital. Pennyworth revealed he borrowed the Lamborghini since the limousine was totaled in the incident. Wayne ordered him to pick up him front. Pennyworth insisted things would not go well if the doctor saw him. Wayne retorted he wouldn't if he drove fast. They went to the Batcave and used a satellite to track down the squad car used by Montoya. Pennyworth noted she was driving in circles. Batman explained it was to throw off anyone following her and continued to suit up. Pennyworth pointed out that he wouldn't lift his injured arm even with a power brace equipped and inquired how he would drive.

Batman tossed him the Batmobile's button remote to his chagrin. En route to Haney and Aparo Street, Batman told Pennyworth to speed up. He found it absurd and pointed out they were already hydroplaning through the downpour and mused one more jolt would put him in a full-body cast. Batman sent a text to Montoya to wait for him but it was ignored and she went inside Muscle Zone Fitness alone. Muscle was about to kill Navarro but Batman intervened and kicked him from behind. He jabbed Batman and realized he was wounded. Batman needed to end the fight quick and used an exploding Batarang on a nearby weight bench. He was buried him in barbells but wasn't done yet. The Muscle stood back up and raised a broken barbell over his head. He appreciated the extra workout and imagined getting a bonus for Batman's corpse but Montoya came up behind him and shot his arms. The barbell fell on his head and he was knocked out.

Montoya returned to Wayne's hospital room with Navarro. Wayne played along and noted it sounded she took an awful chance going without backup. Montoya admitted that while it cost a badge damaged in the firefight, it was worth it. She talked about how she outsmarted the Muscle and tricked him into shooting the first thing he saw. Navarro teased it was a trick inspired by Batman. Montoya stated a good idea was a good idea and admitted she was grateful for Batman helping her but that could easily change the next day. Navarro thought it was a shame Batman wasn't around to stop Wayne from getting shot. Pennyworth handed Wayne a cup of water and mused even Batman couldn't be everywhere. A month later, the body of Ambrose Chapell, a high-powered business manager linked to the who's who of racketeering, washing ashore at a boat landing. Commissioner Gordon briefed Batman and Robin. Batman immediately remembered he worked for Emerson Mayfield. Batman believed Mayfield's return to politics would be nothing but trouble and summoned the team to the Batcave so he could apprise them of his history with the former mayor. He wanted to know why after nearly 15 years Mayfield no longer feared him.

Batman took his frustrations out on a group of smugglers. The last two smugglers were tossed out of the office window. One of them formally surrendered to Commissioner Gordon. He noticed Batman was more surly than usual. Robin alluded to Mayfield's campaign as the reason. Mayfield soon announced his candidacy for mayor of Gotham City. Hamilton Hill Junior was still confident he would win the election and become mayor officially but wanted some insurance, namely an endorsement from Bruce Wayne. He asked Dick Grayson, his old pledge brother for help. He cautioned him Wayne didn't do endorsements. Junior didn't see a problem since he already got a campaign donation from him and Grayson was his son. Grayson clarified he was his ward. Junior didn't want to split hairs and asked him again. Batman declined like Nightwing thought. He was still curious why he wouldn't. Batman stated he wasn't going to turn Bruce Wayne into a kingmaker and still believed the people would make the right choice.

Batman infiltrated Mayfield's home. Mayfield claimed he could sense him thanks to taking up Tai Chi and recalled Charles de Gaulle's "Old age. It's a shipwreck." Batman recalled he saw what was left of his old business manager, Ambrose Chapell. Mayfield feigned innocence and stated he cut off all his old ties long ago and was starting life anew. He told Batman about the stroke he suffered and interpreting his recovery as a second chance from God then deciding to make up for his past sins by running for mayor again and do things right the second time around. He hoped Batman would give him a chance, too. Batman briefly entertained the notion but his willpower was too strong and he snapped and grabbed Mayfield by the collar. He stated he knew he was up to no good and when he found out what it was, he was going down and he would see to that personally. Security alerted Ms. Hanbury, Mayfield's manager, about a breach. She went to check on Mayfield and found him ruffled at his balcony. He informed her he had a little heart-to-heart with Batman. He claimed he almost had him but his mind was too strong, almost inhuman.

Hanbury asked how much Batman knew and if they were in trouble. Mayfield said they weren't yet but they were too close to victory to take a chance and decided to bring in someone. Hanbury noted they had several players in the wings and asked who he had in mind. Mayfield was amused she called it "player" and revealed he was thinking about "the actor." Clayface was tasked with taking out Batman. Pennyworth was perplexed with Emerson Mayfield's popularity in his campaign for mayor. He wondered how he could even attract enough people for a game of bridge after what he did 15 years ago. Wayne admitted he could really turn on the charm. Pennyworth noted that sounded like he was resigned to another Mayfield administration. Wayne decided to go to Mayfield's rally at the Iceberg Lounge. Pennyworth was aghast by the crowds and compared it to the nonsense of the Oscars. Wayne had Pennyworth drive to the rear so he could use Penguin's private entrance. Mr. Wing was assigned to the door and refused to let Wayne in because he wasn't on the list.

Luckily, Barbara Gordon was present as a campaign volunteer and told Wing he was with her. She joked she could get him a sweat deal on sweatpants if he didn't mind Mayfield's face on his bum. Gordon admitted she was undercover to gather intel while on the inside but told him the campaign was secretive and all planning was done from Mayfield's home. She also warned him about Mayfield's manager, Ms. Hanbury. Almost on cue, Hanbury scolded Gordon about taking an unauthorized person backstage. Mayfield noticed Wayne and declared they could make an exception. Wayne downplayed his presence and claimed he just dropped by to see what the buzz was all about but hoped to avoid the crowds. Mayfield promised he would have made arrangements if he knew ahead of time and found him an area to watch from backstage. Mayfield complimented him on looking like his father and mentioned he knew him. Wayne was mesmerized by the festivities. Reporters found him and barraged him with questions. Summer Gleeson asked him for comments on the campaign. Wayne replied he was just an interested bystander. Gleeson wasn't buying it. Wayne blurted out Mayfield was really quite extraordinary.

Pennyworth listened in on comms with the radio. He was surprised to hear Wayne tell the press that. He ran back to the car and told Pennyworth to get him away. Pennyworth mused that sounded like an endorsement. Wayne turned his phone off upon noticing Hamilton Hill Junior trying to call him. Pennyworth noticed the Batsignal in the sky. Batman went to the police headquarters roof and fought a man that looked like Errol Flynn. He laughed off a gut punch and smacked Batman. He attempted to throw the Batsignal projector at Batman. It went down the side of police headquarters but didn't hurt anyone. He noticed Batman hanging from a ledge with his grapnel gun. He leaped down and undid it. Batman still landed on the sidewalk unharmed. He followed and prepared to finish him off in front of an "audience." Batman suspected who the assailant was and threw a batarang at a fire hydrant. The man decided to finish him off in the sequel, shielded his face, and ran off. Batman noticed muddy footprints. Detective Bullock yelled they weren't paying for the projector. Batman quipped he would send them a new one.

Batman suspected Clayface. The next night, he went to Arkham Asylum where he was supposed to be incarcerated. The chief of security, Officer Hanson, claimed Matt Hagen was a model inmate and no one escaped in months. Batman still wanted to see Clayface. Clayface feigned surprise at a visit from his most "persistent fan." He morphed his head into Riddler and teasingly asked to what he owed the honor then to Two-Face and claimed there were malefactors in Arkham twice as dangerous as him. He shifted to the Ventriloquist & Scarface and claimed he was meek as a lamb and a regular cream puff. He shifted to Harley Quinn and mused Batman was bored. He shifted to Joker and invited him in for some laughs. Batman pounded the glass and taunted him about hamming it up as Flynn. Clayface told him to spare him the Rotten Tomatoes review and claimed he was in his cell since their last fight months ago. Hanson vouched for that. Batman asked for the security recordings from the previous night. Clayface told him he was wasting his time. Batman taunted him, mentioning seeing him shield his face from the water erupting out of a hydrant and the muddy footprints left on scene.

After his departure from Arkham, Robin told Batman over comms that the Batcomputer was detecting the Batmobile was carrying over three hundred extra pounds. Batman noticed the onboard data wasn't loading. Clayface revealed himself and attacked. Tendrils entered the Batmobile while he pounded the exterior. Batman changed course, plowed through fencing and parked cars, and drove into the harbor waters. He told Robin to bring the Batwing and some chains. Batman returned to Arkham and yanked Hanson off his chair. He demanded to know what he was thinking letting Clayface out to attack him. Hanson had no idea what he was talking about and pointed to the monitor. The feed of Clayface's cell showed it was empty but Hanson claimed he was seeing Clayface. Joker was intrigued and started to watch rather than sit through another episode of "Law and Order." Batman took Hanson's earphone away and Hanson no longer saw Clayface in his cell. Robin put it on and saw Clayface attacking Batman from behind. He threw out three Batarangs but luckily, they missed Dr. Leland. Batman grabbed Robin and removed the earphone.

They retired to Leland's office. Despite being confidential, Batman went through Mad Hatter's file. Leland suspected Clayface wasn't working alone. Batman noted Hatter was released four months ago for good behavior. He found the doctor's diagnosis laughably premature. Leland stated she didn't sign off on it. Batman showed her the file and it proved she did. She had no recollection of it. Batman warned her not to put anything on her head until things were dealt with. They investigated the address on Hatter's file but found an old building with an elderly woman who shot at them until Batman got her hat off. Commissioner Gordon was notified and he put out an APB on Mad Hatter. Batman worked into through the night into Election Day trying to figure out how to block Mad Hatter's encoded mind control signal. Junior trying calling in vain then went to Wayne Manor and refused to leave until Bruce Wayne saw him. At 8:30, Pennyworth found him in the Batcave and informed him Hamilton Hill Jr. came for a visit. He was livid about Wayne's endorsement of Emerson Mayfield. Wayne downplayed it and claimed he was just being polite.

Junior presented that day's Gotham Globe and pointed to the headline of "Mayfield's Man." Wayne asked him what he could do since people were already voting. Junior asked him to endorse him at a press conference and revealed he already notified the press then pointed out he was neck-and-neck with Mayfield thanks to him. Tim Drake interrupted them and announced there was something on TV they needed to see. Barbara Gordon told Summer Gleeson, in an interview, that she was recruited by Junior to infiltrate and sabotage Mayfield's campaign. Junior was naturally shocked. He told Wayne he hardly knew the girl and all of what she said was a lie. Wayne asked Junior if he still wanted to do the public endorsement. Junior was livid and knew the press would crucify him. He slipped out after Alfred Pennyworth offered him a cup of tea to go. Wayne deduced Gordon was under Hatter's mind control and he was working for Mayfield. Batman and Robin set off for Mayfield's estate. Batman told Pennyworth to notify Nightwing. Pennyworth eventually got a reading on the GPS on Barbara Gordon's phone and sent the coordinates to Batman and Nightwing. The latter chased the signal.

Batman and Robin found the estate nearly vacant aside from a few guards. Robin found a feather. Batman and Robin briefly interrogated Penguin at the Iceberg Lounge. Batman hung him upside down and Robin tickled him with one of Mr. Wing's feathers. He eventually stated he loaned Wing to Emerson Mayfield for additional security as a political favor. Batman briefly pondered Mayfield surrounded himself with ruthless underlings and concluded Mayfield relocated to Arkham Asylum. Mayfield promised the inmates his first act as mayor would be to close down Arkham and give them all pardons if they killed Batman. Batman and Robin burst in through the skylight. Hatter took a guard's gun and declared he refused to let Batman kill his dream for Gotham to be a Wonderland. Batman told Hatter he built a fantasy from a house of cards intricately designed but doomed to collapse. He knocked the gun away with a Batarang. They heard Joker's laughter. Batman went to him while Robin freed the guards. Joker was laughing over the election results and informed Mayfield he lost. Mayfield was shocked.

Joker was tickled he used dirty tricks, a smear campaign, and mind control and still didn't win. He mockingly congratulated Mayfield, who he called "Mayor Mayhem." Mayfield was infuriated and grabbed Joker by the neck spouting off Gotham was his, his legacy and his destiny. Batman came between them and the guards hauled Mayfield away while he blamed Batman. Joker called him a sore loser. He vowed he would see Batman dead. Joker mused politics were entertaining and thought about running for mayor next time. He was locked back up swiftly. Ultimately, Gotham's registered voters already made up by their minds by the time of the scandal and Hamilton Hill Junior won with 58 percent of the vote. Barbara Gordon, free of Mad Hatter's control, went to Summer Gleeson with the truth of what happened to her. Junior was met with the full support of city council and Bruce Wayne gave his endorsement. Gordon was approached by a major publisher to write a tell-all account of the ordeal. She promised Batman she wouldn't tell everything.

On Christmas, Bruce Wayne was surprised Tim Drake got him a Gray Ghost figure kit he never knew existed and thanked him. He reckoned Drake did have a knack for matching people with the right gift. On cue, Pennyworth used his gift from Drake, a teapot that looked like Santa Claus's head. Hired by the mob, Killer Croc went up Stonegate's drainiage pipes and knocked out guards on duty. While Muscle was shaving in the restroom, he was sucker punched by Killer Croc. Luckily, Batman was tailing Croc based on a tip and intervened. On March 27, Batman, Commissioner Gordon, and Reverend Justus Meadows sat on the other side of a two-way mirror and observed District Attorney Janet Van Dorn's meeting with Muscle. Muscle claimed he could have taken Croc, he never got sucker punched twice, and wished Batman stayed out of it. He looked at the two-way mirror and thanked Batman for nothing. Batman believed he would reject the deal out of pride but Meadows thought he was being unfair.

Muscle looked at the mugshot of Valestra then told Van Dorn to shove it. Batman advised Meadows to stand back when that explosion hits. Meadows wondered why he even bothered to save the Muscle's life. Gordon called it his curse. On the night of March 28, Pennyworth asked Batman if he was taking part in the Muscle's transfer to a safe house. Batman admitted he was not invited officially. Pennyworth hoped for a safe passage, noting Muscle would be a powerful witness if all went well. Batman was more concerned about how a prison chaplain was able to convince Muscle to reconsider and accept the deal to testify against Esther Valestra. Pennyworth recalled the saying that Heavens can work miracles. Batman retorted that was not a thing in Gotham. Using the tracer he planted on the armored van, Batman kept watch over the convoy. It was soon attacked by several gunmen. Batman arrived in the Batmobile and gassed several of the men who were perched on a nearby fire exit. More men drove by and fired a bazooka into the van. Batman checked the tracer he planted on Reverend Justus Meadows.

Meadows was aiding Muscle escape but also sold him out to Esther Meadows, who hired Lock-Up to execute Muscle. He asked Lock-Up to kill him after he left since he was still a man of peace. Muscle was enraged he was betrayed by Meadows. Meadows quoted Isaiah and told him those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. Batman suddenly punched him out then addressed Lock-Up, hoping it felt good taking money from the criminals he once claimed to despise to mop things up for the mob. Lock-Up retorted he would feel a better after he finished off the two freaks before him. Batman threw out several gas balls and invited him to find them. Muscle punched Batman's shoulder to make sure he wasn't weak like the last time they fought. Batman decked him and asked if he was satisfied. Muscle yelled at him to hurry and free him. Lock-Up's drones emerged from the smoke screen and attacked. Batman used exploding batarangs while Muscle looked for an exit. He found a cargo elevator but was tasered by one of the drones. Batman destroyed it but Muscle implored him to save his own butt.

A drone snagged Batman in a constricting net. Lock-Up caught up and promptly attacked Batman. Muscle considered leaving but figured Batman would make for a good bargaining chip and hit Lock-Up's head with the butt of his gun. On the elevator, Muscle mused they were a couple of Super Friends now. Batman told him to shut up and get the laser out of the left compartment of his belt. Muscle asked what it was for, teasing Catwoman but Lock-Up caught up to them again. Batman implored him to cut the net. Muscle dropped it to fight Lock-Up. Batman reached for the laser and got free. Muscle took several punches and yelled at Batman to hurry up. Batman severed the elevator and Lock-Up plummeted with it while Batman fired a grapling gun with Muscle in tow. The police burst in. Muscle surrendered. Montoya noted that leniency would be off the table. Muscle did not care about that and took solace in being able to help take down Valestra, Meadows, and Rupert Thorne. Batman suggested there may still be a way to get time off. The Muscle told him he was out of options and would take the chance. Batman made a call to Director Amanda Waller.

Bruce Wayne attended Cassie Kendall's party atop Sorkin Arms. He swore she had not changed one bit then apologized for leaving early. She noted he was just like when they first met at the winter formal, the perfect gentleman. She teased she wished he had not been one. Wayne kissed her on the forehead and told her she would always be the belle of the ball to him. Pennyworth escorted Wayne to his car. He thought it was wonderful to see her again. He admitted he thought Wayne and Kendall would have been an item before Andrea Beaumont came around. Wayne agreed she almost did but was distracted by a woman in a colorful jacket, Harley Quinn incognito, walking by. Just as they exited the Sorkin Arms, a masked kidnapper fell to his death and landed on top of Wayne's car. Pennyworth quipped fortunately his suit was in the trunk. Batman fished Harley as she fell out of compromised swimming pool to a certain death. Gordon and Batman observed Harley Quinn's interrogation. Quinn claimed she was trying to save Kendall. Gordon noted the security camera footage backed up her claim. Batman asked him what he wanted to do. Gordon told him she was all his.

Batman escorted her to Ivy's home on Pershing Place. She told Batman they were on a break then told him she went to see Kendall to see if there was still an attraction. She stopped and was amused she was talking about love to Batman. Batman was surprised they were an item. Quinzel admitted Kendall played the field and remembered they had some laughs about Bruce Wayne being strung along. He left and conferred with Pennyworth who was in the Batcave. Batman noted Kendall never gave him any reason to think they weren't exclusive at the time. Pennyworth told him she wasn't to blame for wanting to see other people as that was part of finding out who one is. He informed Batman police had identified the masked kidnapper as Rusty Franks, a low-ranking henchman last in the employ of Two-Face. Batman noted Kendall's fortune was worth two hundred million dollars but the kidnapping didn't fit Two-Face's m.o. because of the grand scale.

After an hour and few tips, Batman tracked Two-Face to his latest hideout at the Second Chance Mission. Perched across the street, he watched as a disguised Harley immolated a rude henchman with a Molotov cocktail. He disarmed Two-Face with a Batarang and put out the henchman with a miniature extinguisher. Harley asked Two-Face about Rusty Franks to his surprise. She knew him from Joker's gang back in the day and revealed Franks used the "Ditzoid" nickname when he thought she wasn't listening. Two-Face claimed he hadn't seen Franks since his last stint at Arkham Asylum and he would never hurt "Sweet Cassie." Harley and Batman realized he and Kendall had a fling during college, too. Two-Face admitted it only lasted one or two nights. Harley kicked him flat on his back. Batman tied him up. She noticed he was ready to slug him and offered to talk about his anger issues. He told her to be quiet. While Batman talked to Gordon in the Batmobile she lay on the hood.

Gordon informed him a ransom demand was made to Mr. Becker, Kendall's trust attorney. Becker explained the nature of the restrictive trust because of Kendall's impetuous tendencies. Batman told him to delay the ransom but Becker admitted he had no choice but to wire the two hundred million already. Harley looked back on the last time she saw Kendall years ago and concluded she should have let the past stay buried. Batman thought that was easier said than done, sometimes, and asked her where her "secret rendezvous" with Kendall was. They headed to a stadium owned by the Kendall family. Batman swung into the stadium's luxury suite and took out the kidnappers as quickly as he could, noting Harley was on his side but was still a wild card. Kendall picked up a dropped gun and ordered him and Harley to freeze or they were dead. Harley recalled the wild times they had in the suite. Kendall revealed she kept her around for laughs.

Harley offered her another, a corker. She popped the cork on a bottle of champagne. It hit her right eye. Kendall fired wildly, lost her balance, and fell out of of the suite. Harley grabbed her arm at the last second but spared her life then told Batman Kendall was the past and left, now happy by herself for the time being. Kendall tried to claim she was the victim. Batman handcuffed her and told her she mistook him for someone who cared. After Straightman broke Joker out of Arkham Asylum, Batman raced against the clock to find them. He deduced Joker wanted to announce his return in a grand style. He tracked them to the Simon Trent Theater. Batman swung in and drop kicked him. He used Joker's acid squirting flower but Straightman did not flinch when it touched his arm. Batman cuffed Joker then tried to punch Straightman out in vain. Batman threw out a Batarang and let a giant crescent moon prop drop on him but Straightman caught it and threw it. Batman jumped out of the way but was grabbed and tossed out the stage door into a pile of trash in the alley outside.

Straightman grabbed his neck but from 100 yards, Deadshot fired a diamond-tipped tranquilizer into his neck. Muscle and Katana attacked Straightman. Straightman promised to kill them all but he lost consciousness. Joker threw out smoke bombs and fled the theater in a Joker-themed motorcycle with Straightman stashed in the sidecar. From a high rise building roof, Colonel Haslett observed the battle. Batman eventually noticed her but she felt she was far away enough he would discount her as another urban voyeur getting their kicks. She left with a glider. Batman took the Batglider to the Institute. He dropped in from the skylight. King Shark reckoned a midnight snack arrived. Batman jumped over him and threw a net on him then threw out a Batarang to counter a boomerang thrown at him. He quickly pinned Captain Boomerang to a wall with three Batarangs. Deadshot raised his gauntlet to the back of Batman and teased it would be a shame to blow his head off after he saved his sorry butt. Batman already deduced Deadshot was the marksman who fired a dart into Straightman at the fight prior.

Katana found Bataman as charming as ever. Boomerang teased he was still the bat you loved to hate. Muscle clarified he only hated Batman. Batman mused his recommendation for Muscle paid off. Muscle promised he would quickly serve his time then look him up. Katana asked Batman if he was walking out peacefully or if it was going to be messy. King Shark liked messy. Amanda Waller told the team not to bother since there were only five of them against one of him and he would not leave until he was ready so she wanted to hear him out. Batman noticed a chair and asked if that was used to inject the nanite bombs. Waller replied it was sometimes and asked if he was volunteering but cut to the chase. Batman asked her what Task Force X was doing in Gotham. She claimed the government assigned them put the Joker down once and for all. Batman did not believe her and noted the team was focused on Straightman. She claimed their strategy was to knock off the goon and the boss falls next. Batman was not buying it and stated the Suicide Squad was sent in when it benefits the government or to cover up their mistakes.

Waller stuck to her story. Batman asked about the "woman on the building." Waller had no idea what he was talking about. Batman fired his grappling gun and remarked that was the only thing she said he believed. She informed him Katana was the only woman on the team after Harley Quinn made parole. Batman hailed Barbara Gordon over comms after he spoke with Amanda Waller about Straightman. He did not believe her story that Task Force X was sent to assassinate Joker. She opened Straightman's military file but he wanted access to the classified documents. She teased he and Pennyworth were overdue for a refresher on firewall hacking. Gordon deduced Batman already read the basic intelligence on Straightman and promised to start digging until she found more. Batman arrived at the Batcave. The next night, Batman tracked Joker and Straightman to Sunshine Hotel but they already gone. He recalled word on the street was they were staying mobile. He found slept in beds and day old take out food.

Batman dodged a kick from the woman spying on him the other night and noted she was fast and very strong. One of her kicks broke a table in half. She stated she did not want to fight. Batman noted she certainly knew how and concluded she was not on Amanda Waller's team. She revealed Waller was going to dissect "Carl" like an animal. Batman realized she knew Finley before he became Straightman. She got set off by "Straightman" and claimed she was trying to save Finley from Waller and Joker then vowed the latter would burn for what he did. Batman demanded answers. She stated she had no time for it but was not his enemy. She opened fire with rubber bullets and he fell out a window. He noted she had a funny way of showing it. He recovered and fired a grapling gun. He observed the woman leave on a glider. Robin watched Alfred Pennyworth patch up Batman in the Batcave and provided a pain-laden soundtrack. Pennyworth did not find it necessary. Robin noted those rubber bullets left some nasty bruises. Batman informed him not all of them were from bullets because his assailant had the strength of ten men at least thanks to an enhanced suit she was wearing under her costume.

Robin asked how he knew it was a suit. Batman brought up schematics on the Batcomputer and revealed it was a prototype battle suit developed by WayneTech in partnership with the military aimed at making its wearer stronger, more agile, and resistant to conventional weapon attacks. He added they were even experimenting with limited flight ability. Robin was impressed and asked when they were getting Batsuit upgrades. Batman cautioned it would be years from now because the suit was still in the testing phase. Robin keyed on "was." Batman revealed Lucius Fox informed him it was stolen. Robin speculated Scarecrow or Bane had it but Batman knew only someone with top-level access could get near it. He replayed security footage showing Colonel Nora Haslett, the military overseer on the project, was the last person to visit the test site. While on the road in the Batmobile, Batman contacted Barbara Gordon for help. She was glad to have a distraction from reading about the fifth circle of hell in "Dante's Inferno" but she was disappointed to learn he just needed her to locate the battle suit through a backdoor since its tracing system was shut down. He sent her all the specs and polymorphic codes.

Batman parked outside Camp Finger and used the ejector seat to propel himself over the guard shack. Colonel Haslett finished a set on the bench press and discovered Batman was in the room with her. He alluded to hearing about Joker's visit. She asked what he wanted. He wanted to find Carl Finley before Joker did but he needed information like how Finley became Straightman in the first place. Haslett stated she followed protocol and refused to discuss military matters with a freak show. She advised him to leave before she threw him out. Batman observed she was lifting 400 pounds and remarked it was impressive for someone who just started the Army's super-soldier program right before it was aborted. He mused she could be wearing something to make her stronger. Haslett ordered him to keeps his hands off her. Professor Strange entered the room and revealed he informed the military police already. Batman mused Strange's involvement in the program was why it had gone to hell. Strange pointed out how quickly he went to personal attacks because he was a classic case of Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

Batman warned him the Joker never quit until he got what he wanted. The military police arrived but Batman was already gone. Three punks found Straightman asleep on a park bench and proceeded to rob him at knife point. He made quick work of them. Once one woke up in the hospital, Commissioner Gordon let Batman know. Batman and Robin drove around in the area of the assault. Robin wished it could be somewhere fun for once like a beach. Barbara Gordon hailed Batman on comms and announced she just interfaced with the stolen suit and could see what the thief was seeing. She revealed the thief was heading for Gotham's old eastside carnival, one of Joker's recent but vacated haunts. Batman and Robin intercepted the thief but before he could warn Robin of the suit's hidden weapons, Robin was immobilized in a metal bola. She fired electricity at Batman but he dodged and kicked her into the carousel. He tried to reason with her but she knew he was going to put Straightman in prison. She bashed him with one of the carousel's horses.

Gordon accessed the suit's remote control and shut it down. Batman unmasked the thief. She was Professor Strange's assistant, Gretchen Gallway. He noted she was ex-military and a former medic who was with the Army's super-soldier program since day one. Gallway stated she was acting on her own and wanted to save Straightman from everyone. She told them about Straightman's origins, her misgivings about the program, and how Joker used Strange's Psi-Ber Helmet to brainwash him. She speculated Joker was getting back at Strange because of their unpleasant history at Arkham Asylum then admitted to stealing the battle suit to get close enough to Straightman and stole Colonel Haslett's I.D. Card to steal it. She believed she could use the helmet to purge the Joker's control from Straightman's brain but he was already disassociating from reality and becoming psychotic like the rest of the super soldier subjects. Robin asked what happened to them. Gallway revealed they were all eliminated when they became impossible to control but any record of that was covered up already. Batman asked where the helmet was currently. She revealed Strange heeded Batman's warning about Joker and had the Psi-Ber Helmet moved to a safer location.

Professor Strange, Nurse Gallway, Colonel Haslett, Commissioner Gordon, Batman, and Robin went over the military transport used for the Psi-Ber Helmet. Haslett found the sight of the dead Jokerized men monstrous then blamed Strange and Gallway. Strange believed Gallway could be useful in manipulating Finley since they had a rapport. Robin sarcastically praised Strange for treating everyone like lab rats. Strange surmised Batman indulged Robin to assuage some guilt within his psyche then advised Batman to keep the brat silent. Robin quipped he thought Harley was the worst shrink in Gotham. Batman told them both that was enough and emphasized the need to find Joker and Straightman before Waller and Task Force X turned Gotham into their own personal warzone. Gordon notified Batman they may have a lead on Finley in The East Side. Batman and Robin approached him. Straightman stated he was a solo act now. Batman pleaded with him to come with them. Robin pointed out he was barbecuing rats. Straightman joked that was because the pigeons flew away too fast. He told them to scram so he could work on new jokes.

Batman put his hand on Straightman's shoulder and stated they just wanted to help. Straightman grabbed Batman by the neck and lifted him off the ground then threw him. Batman realized he was unhinged and more powerful than ever. Robin attacked with a jump kick. Batman knew he had to end the fight quick and remotely summoned the Batmobile through his belt. Straightman was able to stop the Batmobile in its tracks and lifted it up over his head. Robin got behind him, snagged his right leg with a line, and pulled. Straightman lost his balance and the car pinned him to ground. Batman rendered him unconscious with Strange's knockout serum. Barbara Gordon hailed Batman on comms from the Batcave and notified him of a high-priority message from someone called "The Wall." Batman went to The Institute and asked what Joker did. Waller briefed him on her team's defeat. Harley added King Shark got the worst of it and the doctors were still working on him. Harley revealed when she came to, she was tied to a kiddie ride and watched as Joker used the helmet on her teammates one by one and renamed them J-Team. She also noted Joker wanted to win her back with his charms to her disgust.

Batman brought up Waller's method of tracking her team through the bombs in their brains. Waller confirmed she did and they commandeered a S.W.A.T. van, took police hostages, and were headed to Camp Finger. Harley used a pin to pick her cuffs and get free. Waller insisted he take Harley along. Batman believed she just wanted to get rid of her. At Camp Finger, Gallway attended to Finley. Batman, Robin, and Batgirl were on standby. Strange checked in on Finley. Finley became irate and reckoned he should snap Strange's neck. Dressed as a general, Joker commanded the brainwashed Task Force X to attack the base. Batgirl, Robin, and Haslett took cover behind a giant satellite dish. Robin saw Deadshot with a bazooka. Batman swung and and kicked Deadshot. The bazooka went off and the explosion took out Muscle and Boomerang. Robin warned Batman Katana was behind him. Harley fired a tranquilizer dart into Katana's neck. Harley apologized and promised she was welcome to join the next Girls Night. Harley declared she was done with Task Force X and reckoned she should join the Bat-Family because they could use a few laughs. She realized they were gone.

Gallway pleaded in vain for Finley to be spared. Strange told her not to be an idiot. Joker advised her to listen to the professor. Batman kicked the door down. Joker grabbed Gallway and held her at gunpoint. Finley became enraged, grabbed Joker, and slammed him like a ragdoll. Haslett got him to stop by telling him "At ease." Harley remarked she was enjoying the show. Days later, Barbara Gordon brought tea down to the Batcave. Bruce Wayne told her Task Force X no longer had a reason to eliminate Straightman and Amanda Waller pulled strings to ensure Professor Strange was blamed for the incident. Gordon assumed Joker was still in intensive care. Tim Drake thought it wouldn't be too much to hope he stayed that way. Gordon asked about Finley. Wayne told her he was still undergoing therapy and the Psi-Ber Helmet was able to remove most of Joker's brainwashing and Task Force X was completely restored since they were under Joker's control for a shorter amount of time, Muscle was the last to have it erased, and Waller kept her word and released Harley Quinn's friends. Drake was eager to put some bat ears on the WayneTech prototype suit but Wayne was done with super soldier projects and was putting it in storage.

Batman hung off Man-Bat while Batgirl and Robin snagged his legs with their grapling guns. Batman dove off and tied Man-Bat upside down from a light pole for the Gotham City Police Department S.W.A.T. unit. At some point, the Wayne Enterprises Board voted to diversify its holdings. Bruce Wayne signed the contracts. One of the acquisitions was a Caribbean island resort. After four months of no criminal activity, Bruce Wayne and Tim Drake went to the Wayne Caribbean island resort for some "family time" on Alfred Pennyworth's suggestion. Drake had no issue with kicking back but Wayne hated it. While Drake checked in with Pennyworth over the phone, Wayne replayed news footage of their last night on the town during the Man-Bat rampage. Drake admitted he wasn't holding his breath the cure would finally take with Dr. Langstrom then he tossed his phone to Wayne, telling him Pennyworth says to relax and enjoy his holiday. Wayne replied he hated holidays. Drake thought that was hard to believe for a guy who owned the place. Wayne explained how it came to. Drake suggested hitting the beach and windsurfing.

Wayne passed and surmised he would go to the gym. Drake pitched playing playboy and charming one of the women checking him out all week. He assured him once there was trouble at home, they would return right away. Talia al Ghul disguised herself in kendo gear and forced Wayne into a match. He recognized her bold style and quickly surmised who she was. She shattered his bokken but he countered and hit her hood off. They retired to a bar near sunset. She noted crime was virtually extinct in Gotham and Batman was inactive so it seemed logical he was on holiday. Wayne inquired how she knew exactly where he was. She teased he should apply his detective skills to his business dealings, then revealed she knew a Wayne Enterprises shell company owned the resort but the al Ghul family owned the island it resided on. She joked the hotel staff contained almost no assassins and very few ninjas but he didn't laugh. She then revealed her father was not the same man as when they first met. He was more introspective and more appreciative of the time he had left.

Wayne found it hard to believe. She invited him to come see for himself and told him to look for the family yacht, the biggest in the bay. That night, Drake declared the resort replaced the Batmobile as the coolest thing he ever saw. Wayne surmised he might not keep the resort because the landlord might be a problem. Drake pointed out the resort had everything and you could even order s'mores from room service. Wayne announced he was going windsurfing. Drake pointed out it was 10 pm. Wayne retorted he could say the same about s'mores. Drake passed and took advantage of Max being available. Under the guise of windsurfing, Wayne performed reconnaissance but two guards on jet skis engaged him after he counted 14 total. They opened fire with laser guns. Wayne speculated the men acted on their own. He tackled one off his ski, took it over, and fired a flare into the other, detonating it. He hoped they could swim.

Suddenly he was swallowed up, realizing Ra's's plan was to have the gunmen force him farther out to sea. He found himself in a submarine and was greeted by Talia al Ghul. She revealed a late dinner was already prepared. Wayne joked he would have worn a tie had he known. She already had a suit picked out for him: a Bruno Cucinello, cashmere, wide-cut at the shoulders. He surmised the submarine came with its own haberdashery. She quipped it was the "baby" of the fleet. While Wayne got dressed in a room, he recalled it was two years since he saw Ra's. Ubu came to gather him. Wayne was surprised to see Ra's an old man. He could see the wheels spinning in Wayne's head. Ra's revealed the Lazarus Pit no longer healed him and he was rapidly aging. Mortality forced him to take a hard look at his long life and admit to his regrets. Wayne asked how he planned to make things right. Ra's unveiled his Gaia Grain to Wayne and explained it was designed to flourish in anyplace and any season and could be effortlessly modified to simulate any food texture or taste.

To Wayne's surprise, the grain was used on their dinner, from the wine to the lobster thermidor. Ra's believed the grain would be crucial for Earth as it neared eight billion inhabitants and assured him he was no longer out to eliminate entire populations to ensure a new start for mankind. He wanted to end world hunger. Wayne was skeptical. Ra's implored him to take a sample and analyze it. He claimed he was sincere and as death approached, he wanted to implement the grain and leave this legacy to his heirs, both Talia and Wayne. Talia and Wayne retired to a room. Talia joked she thought of bats when she saw manta rays but Wayne was lost in thought. Wayne still thought the offer was crazy but Talia believed her father's organization and Wayne's will and connections could do a lot of good and shared Ra's believed in him as if he were his own son. She asked him if it was time to save the world and to save their relationship. They kissed.

Batman and Robin entered Poison Ivy's greenhouse to find her and Harley fighting zombie Talons. The Talons jumped out of the greenhouse and used their wing gliders. Robin declared they were too much for anyone these days but Batman wasn't so sure. After Catwoman was tended to, Batman asked Ivy to find out if the Gaia Grain was safe. On the way back to the Batcave, Batman called Commissioner Gordon to inform him about the current events. He didn't understand why the Court of Owls wanted Catwoman and Man-Bat or how the Court was still around after Hamilton Hill's second death. Batman implied he might not have but the jury was still out on that. He admitted he wasn't sure why someone was directing the Talons nor to what end. Gordon noted the menagerie of animal-themed players involved just when he was considering taking his pension. Batman and Robin arrived to see Pennyworth waiting for them with Ra's al Ghul and Ubu. They settled in the dining room in the manor. Ra's only asked for water since he took little nourishment anymore.

Ra's told Wayne he was dismayed to learn he was back in uniform. Wayne cited unfinished business that warranted his attention. Ra's appealed to Wayne about his quest to save Gotham serving as a surrogate for the one thing he could never save, his parents, and implored him to create one anew, accept his offer, and the transfer of power could begin before it was too late. Ivy informed Batman the Gaia Grain has a remarkable rate of growth, overtaking her greenhouse in one day from just a small dose of her own special plant food. Harley hacked her way through the grain in search of Ivy. Ivy corroborated what Batman was told, the grain was capable of flourishing in the most hostile environment and seemed to be an inexhaustible food source. She admitted whoever created it was a miracle worker. Ivy shot Harley in the face with a spray bottle then continued with a concern of hers. A strange, almost defensive sensation came from the grain whenever she touched it. It resisted forming a bond with her unlike all forms of vegetation. Batman asked her to keep trying.

Talia al Ghul entered the Batcave and told Batman the results would always be the same. Batman insisted he had to be sure. She repeated it was change at a better life for all humanity as well as the two of them. Robin ran down to tell Batman there was a security breach but stopped after he saw Talia. He then informed Batman there was a message on their comm line from Catwoman. Batman, Robin, and Talia met up with Catwoman on a roof top. Catwoman was surprised to see his "fan club" and rattled off Talia's file: adventuress, heiress, and one-time owner of such treasures as the La Peregrina pearl and the Bahia Emerald. Talia corrected her and stated the pearl and emerald were still secured inside her family's vault deep within the Swiss Alps. Catwoman teased they "were." Batman inquired what her intel was. Catwoman revealed the Talons discovered her hideout but she escaped before they burst in and she followed them to an abandoned subway entrance. She noted there were sentries and pointed out who she thought was the lead Talon that controlled the others.

They stormed the entrance. Catwoman inquired what Talia's stake was in it. She only wanted to expedite the end of this latest case so Batman could devote his time to more fulfilling endeavors. Catwoman thought that answer dripped with portent. Robin asked why the tunnel was so wet. Batman recalled the old tunnels were built too close to the Gotham riverbed and the river soaked through the walls, which forced the city to abandon the line. Catwoman recognized a mosaic and believed they were close to where she was held. The Talon stalked them but Batman detected him at the last second. Catwoman slashed at him but he countered with a kick. Talia swung her sword but it was knocked away. Robin came in with a jump kick. Batman grabbed the Talon's sword arm and twisted it then pinned him to a column. Batman demanded to know why the Court of Owls returned and why the Talons kidnapped Catwoman and Man-Bat. The Talon called them two insignificant menaces and teased the Owls' wingspan spreads far beyond Gotham. He noted their undying legions had expanded since they last fought. They were surrounded by zombie dogs. Talon ordered the dogs to kill them.

The zombie dogs kept coming. Batman cast a net over several then readied a red Batarang. Robin urged Talia and Catwoman to brace themselves. Batman threw the Batarang into a wall near the dogs. It exploded and the Gotham River swept the dogs away. Batman and Robin fired their grappling guns. Talia commended Batman but Catwoman scoffed at "Beloved." Robin pointed out any one of them could have rode up with him. They pressed on and came to a familiar tunnel. Batman guessed it was the one the Court brought her through. Poison Ivy hailed Batman on his comms but curtly stated it wasn't a good time. Ivy was annoyed but had an update on the Gaia Grain he would find fascinating. Talia and Catwoman started having words. Several miles into the underground, the path changed into caves and trenches. They came upon a junction point with at least three tunnels. Talia noticed someone running down below them and jumped down. She kicked the person and readied her sword.

They discovered it was Kirk Langstrom. He pleaded with Batman for help. Batman wanted him to take them to the Court but Langstrom was scared and remembered his wife. Batman informed him they already talked and presented the pill bottle of Man-Bat Serum. Langstrom tried to grab them but Batman refused and firmly stated they needed to find out who was behind the kidnappings so he would do exactly as he said. Batman could only count on making Langstrom more afraid of him than the Talons. He knew Langstrom was delirious from being on the run for days. Catwoman recognized her prison. Langstrom shushed her and pointed out there were two zombie Talons standing guard up ahead. Batman and Robin quickly dispatched them but everyone was shocked to see they were guarding prison cells holding various Gotham criminals. Valestra became irate at the sight of Batman. Penguin tried to calm her down and pointed out Catwoman was with him and they may have misconstrued the situation. Black Mask demanded their release. Batman realized Ra's al Ghul had most of the major criminals of Gotham taken prisoner in order to later convince him crime-fighting was no longer needed in the city.

Ra's confirmed that was true and called it a ruse of the highest order. Talia was upset at being manipulated. Catwoman quipped her family got more interesting. Robin deduced Ra's was the leader of the Court of Owls. Ra's clarified he was not originally the leader but knew about the Court since its inception since they shared a fascination with extending lifespans. He admitted at one time he thought he could use their Talon Formula to replace the Lazarus Pits but the serum was too crude. Batman surmised he took control of the Talons after Hamilton Hill was killed. Ra's confirmed it was a simple matter to revive and take control of them. He found them to be remarkable foot soldiers when given purpose and validated that by boasting they incarcerated the worst elements of Gotham, done in secret and without one fatality. Talia was upset he deceived them. Ra's chided her for being small-minded and proposed the Talons could continue to safeguard Gotham while she and Batman took on his legacy as well as his allies.

Batman revealed he knew the Gaia Grain was engineered to mutate after the fifth generation seed and at that point, it would produce a chemical designed to alter the human genome and cause sterility. Ra's clarified ninety percent of the populace would live long and natural lives in a world with space and resources to accommodate them. Talia countered no children would be born. Ra's revealed unaltered grain would be given to her and those deemed worthy would give birth to the next generation of Earth's masters. Batman reiterated his suspicions the offer was madness. Ra's repeated he was offering him the world. Talia countered the offer was on his terms and he defined it and it was all just a chess game to get what he wanted. She did not take kindly being his ultimate pawn. Batman added they were all used, including the criminals his Talons imprisoned, and stated no one deserved that. Ra's agreed and mused secret executions and anonymous burials would have been much more effective. Batman declared their fates were not up to him to decide and demanded their release.

Ra's found Batman as twisted as the criminals and ordered the Talons to kill everyone except Talia. Langstrom suddenly attacked the Talons with ease and transformed into Man-Bat, having stolen his pills from Batman earlier in the tunnel. Catwoman released all the prisoners. Batman ordered Robin to leave and bring Commissioner Gordon and the full force of the Gotham City Police Department. The lead Talon tackled Batman and sentenced him to death for trying to deny them a place in Ra's al Ghul's new world. Talia beheaded Talon from behind. She implored Batman to do what had to be done to stop her father. Batman climbed the stairs and kicked Ubu off then entered a room housing a portable Lazarus Pit. Ra's felt like a fool to offer Batman the world and clocked him with his sword guard. He claimed the Lazarus Pit was calling to him, offering new life, a world to save, and a future to build. Batman tried to warn him not to go in but Talia told he longer heard them, just the call of the damned pit. Ra's entered the pit, bled out of his orifices, and collapsed. Batman consoled Talia. He gave her a moment to say goodbye but she vanished with Ra's' body.

Robin, Batman, and Catwoman observed the police and journalists from a nearby roof. Catwoman took off and mused Talia's talent for vanishing must be part of the attraction. Batman replied it was complicated. Catwoman invited him to hunt her up some night when he was on his own. Batman and Robin returned to the Batmobile. Robin assumed it wasn't the last they would see of Talia after Batman clued him in on her exit. He then stated he was never going to take the offer since it would come at the cost of his surrogate family. Robin claimed he knew that. He reported seeing Man-Bat flying south. Batman added he was heading to the waterfront. Robin wanted to bet they could catch him before sunrise. Batman told him to buckle up and they took off in pursuit.
