As the only child of two professors, Victor Fries was under constant pressue to succeed. Fries's parents were harsh taskmasters. Most amusements enjoyed by his schoolmates were denied to him, except during Christmas, when they visited Old Gotham Square. A winter wonderland display always brought a smile to his face. Dr. Victor Fries was a leading researcher in the emerging field of cyrogenics but his wife Nora succombed to an untreatable disease. Fries used GothCorp equipment for his personal use to place Nora in a cyrogenic chamber. The GothCorp executive, Ferris Boyle discovered Fries put the company $3 million in debt and moved to end his career. Boyle and his security guards stormed into Fries' lab. In the scuffle, Fries was doused in cyrogenic coolant and found himself unable to survive outside sub-zero temperatures. Fries created a suit to accomodate these issues with advanced circuitry within the suit that tripled his strength and created a Freeze Gun that is its namesake.

Batman prevented him from killing Boyle and eventually Nora was revived and cured. Her body rejected the cure and she passed away. In a move of desperation, Mr. Freeze procured the services of the Penguin to steal the Shawl of Magdalene from the Church of St. Dumas so he could use it to return Nora Fries back to life. Azrael, the champion of St. Dumas, was dispatched to retrieve the Shawl and exact punishment on the thief. Freeze then stole Fries' body from her grave and took it to to one of his storehouses, an abandoned ice rink named Iceland. He placed the Shawl on Fries and waited. Azrael went to Iceland alone and found the Shawl of Magdalene draped over the corpse of Nora Fries. Mr. Freeze doubted Azrael's sympathy and wouldn't admit the truth that the Shawl didn't work on the dead. Freeze stated it will and it must because he wasn't losing her again. He then froze Azrael with his gun. Luckily, Batman started his search at Iceland because Mr. Freeze used to use the ice rink to store his equipment.

Batman was wary of Freeze because of his desperation to revive Fries. Mr. Freeze estimated Azrael had about 60 seconds left. Batman resorted to jilt Freeze out of his insanity by kicking the table Fries' corpse was resting on. Freeze was shocked and held her wrapped in the Shawl. Batman threw two Batarangs. One landed on Azrael. Batman pleaded with him to let him help. Freeze refused. The second Batarang pierced the back of Freeze's helmet and the sonic pulse it emitted shattered it. Batman grabbed the Freeze Gun and blasted his head. He guessed the ice would keep him breathing long enough for the police to arrive. He then used the Shawl to revive Azrael. Freeze was taken to Arkham Asylum where he stayed for the next couple of months. Well over a year later, on Christmas Eve, Freeze learned a blizzard was set to hit Gotham. He decided to take a risk and clear out Old Gotham Square for himself so he could visit his childhood spot in peace. He used a bazooka with his cryo-technology integrated and sealed up the square in ice.

A police officer who happened to be in the square shot at him but the lead couldn't penetrate his suit. In the holiday mood, he only partially froze the officer. Robin swung in and kicked Freeze. He taunted Freeze that the stores were already closing. Freeze retorted he had no idea what he was up to. Robin guessed it was no good and threw a bola. Freeze easily broke free thanks to some improvements in his suit. Robin tried to grab him but he was too cold and he was backhanded into an reindeer ice sculpture. More police arrived but Freeze recovered his bazooka and further sealed up the square. Robin kicked a lever and taunted him. He fired and inadvertently froze a merry-go-round. It kept moving and burst. While Freeze was temporarily stunned, Robin ran to Fogel's Toys and Collectibles but a family asked for his help in escaping. Robin readied an exploding Batarang but Freeze plucked it out of his hands and kicked a hole in the wall. Robin realized he wasn't planning to steal anything or exact his vengeance.

Freeze clarified only for that day. Robin inquired why he froze the square. Freeze told him about his childhood. Robin commented he had a unique way of strolling down memory lane. Freeze reiterated he didn't intend to harm anyone. Robin quipped today. Commissioner Gordon and a SWAT unit arrived. Robin told them to take it easy because he got what he came for. Freeze surrendered his weapon. A SWAT officer fell over. Freeze was returned to Arkham. On Christmas, he received a gift: a framed photograph Robin took over the Wonderland display. Freeze placed it next to his snow globe.
