Matt Hagen was a famous Gotham actor until a horrible car crash disfigured his face permanently. While recovering at a special clinic, Hagen was approached by the industrialist Roland Dagget to be a test subject for a new miracle cream called Renu-U that could temporarily rejuvenate skin. He had to commit corporate espionage in return. Soon, he attempted to steal enough the cream so he wouldn't need Daggett but he was found out and force fed an extreme amount. He woke up as a being of living clay able to shapeshift into anyone and any object. After failing to exact revenge on Daggett, he attempted to find a cure for his condition. He nearly died but was saved after drifting into chemicals released into the waters he fell into. He started to recover and sent out a piece of himself as a scout. It became confused and wondered off, meeting Robin. Named "Annie," she was pursued by Clayface and eventually reabsorbed.

Sunny, Deathstroke's partner, devised a plan to create a situation where he could organically introduce himself to Batman and his allies without drawing any suspicions. She pretended to be a nameless drug dealer offering a cure to Clayface for his condition. Clayface, still desperate for a cure, fell for it and the "antidote" only increased his paranoia and savagery. Clayface's rampage was only fueled by a downtown theater advertising a reboot of "Gangbuster," a movie he originally starred in and considered his greatest role. He was insulted they went ahead with a remake and did so without him. Batman, Robin, and Batgirl responded before he could destroy the theater. Robin tried to wrangle an arm with rope but was unsuccessful. Batman threw a Batarang then dodged a counterattack. They surrounded Clayface but before they could close in, he split in half and bolted in opposite directions. Batgirl and Robin pursued one while Batman went after the other.

Robin ran into Annie, who pleaded for his help. Batgirl tried to warn Robin but he became angry and threw a freezing capsule at her. She began to revert back to Clayface and took a jump kick from Robin. Robin declared that was for Annie. Clayface still fought back and wrapped a tendril arm around Robin's neck while swiping at Batgirl. Deathstroke leaped down and sliced Clayface's head in half with a sword coated with a fast-acting sedative. Deathstroke promised Clayface would wake up in six hours with nothing more than a bad headache. Batgirl thanked him. Batman arrived with the other half of Clayface frozen and over his shoulder. He already deduced he was Deathstroke based on a code name associated with a mercenary matching his description. Clayface was taken to Arkham Asylum. Several months later, Clayface was recruited by Emerson Mayfield to take out Batman so he wouldn't discover his secret. The mind controlled chief of security unknowingly let Clayface out of his cell.

On the night before the election, Clayface disguised himself as Errol Flynn and activated the Batsignal on the roof of the Gotham City Police Department headquarters. Batman arrived and they fought. He laughed off a gut punch and smacked Batman. He attempted to throw the projector at Batman. It went down the side of police headquarters but didn't hurt anyone. He noticed Batman hanging from a ledge with his grapnel gun. He leaped down and undid it. Batman still landed on the sidewalk unharmed. He followed and prepared to finish him off in front of an "audience." Batman suspected Clayface was the assailant was and threw a batarang at a fire hydrant. The man decided to finish him off in the sequel, shielded his face, and ran off. Batman noticed muddy footprints. Detective Bullock yelled they weren't paying for the projector. Batman quipped he would send them a new one. The next night, he went to Arkham Asylum where he was supposed to be incarcerated. The chief of security, Officer Hanson, claimed Matt Hagen was a model inmate and no one escaped in months. Batman still wanted to see Clayface.

Clayface feigned surprise at a visit from his most "persistent fan." He morphed his head into Riddler and teasingly asked to what he owed the honor then to Two-Face and claimed there were malefactors in Arkham twice as dangerous as him. He shifted to the Ventriloquist & Scarface and claimed he was meek as a lamb and a regular cream puff. He shifted to Harley Quinn and mused Batman was bored. He shifted to Joker and invited him in for some laughs. Batman pounded the glass and taunted him about hamming it up as Flynn. Clayface told him to spare him the Rotten Tomatoes review and claimed he was in his cell since their last fight months ago. Hanson vouched for that. Batman asked for the security recordings from the previous night. Clayface told him he was wasting his time. Batman taunted him, mentioning seeing him shield his face from the water erupting out of a hydrant and the muddy footprints left on scene.

While en route back to Gotham, Batman was told by Robin that the Batcomputer was detecting the Batmobile was carrying over three hundred extra pounds. Batman noticed the onboard data wasn't loading. Clayface revealed himself and attacked. Tendrils entered the Batmobile while he pounded the exterior. Batman changed course, plowed through fencing and parked cars, and drove into the harbor waters to neutralize Clayface. He told Robin to bring the Batwing and some chains. It was discovered Officer Hanson was wearing an earphone compromised with Mad Hatter's mind control circuitry. Once it was removed, Hanson no longer saw Clayface in his cell. Clayface was later one of the criminals kidnapped by Ra's al Ghul's Talons and imprisoned for months until he was released by Catwoman. He and Killer Croc took much satisfaction in destroying as many Talons as possible. He was later arrested by police.
